History and description

AAMI Park was built between 2007 and 2010. It first hosted an event on 7 May 2010, when a Rugby League match was held. The first football match took place a few months later, on the 7th of August, when Melbourne Heart lost 0-1 to the Central Coast Mariners. The project cost 267.5 million Australian Dollars and the stadium was initially planned to hold 20,000 seats, which was later raised to 30,000 at the request of Melbourne Victory.

The AAMI Park features a bio-frame design with a geodesic dome roof that requires 50% less steel than a regular roof. The exterior of the stadium consists of triangular panels that can be lit up with thousands of led lights.

Apart from football, the stadium is also used for rugby matches.

How to get to AAMI Park

AAMI Park is located east of Melbourne's CBD on the north bank of the Yarra. The location has many other sports facilities, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Australian Open tennis courts. Gray skies and cold temperatures forecast for Melbourne this weekend may keep people indoors, but there are plenty of things to do outside if you're looking for a little sunshine. From the southern and eastern parts of the CBD (including Flinders Street Rail Station), the pleasant walk along the banks of the river Yarra can be made within half an hour, providing beautiful views of Melbourne's skyline.

The closest train station to the stadium is Richmond. Multiple services depart from Flinders Station, Southern Cross Station (where the long-distance trains arrive), and other stations. The walk from Richmond station to the stadium takes less than 10 minutes. Jolimont Station is also close by, though slightly further away.

The tram connects the stadium with the Docklands area, and it passes through the southern part of the CBD (and Flinders Station). Take the tram in the direction of Wattle Park and get off at stop AAMI Park (or Hisense Arena).

Walk to the first crosswalk and take the first right. Tram 48 and 75 stop slightly further away near Jolimont Rail Station. You should take the trams in eastern direction and get off at stop Wellington Parade. Walk to the first crosswalk and take the first right.

Address: AAMI Park, Olympic Boulevard, Melbourne

Melbourne Victory Tickets

Ticketek is the official outlet for purchasing Melbourne Victory tickets. The various price points range from AUD 25.00 for a seat behind the goal to AUD 53.00 for a central seat at the long sides. Melbourne Victory regularly plays home matches at the larger Etihad Stadium. For these matches, tickets are being sold via Ticketmaster, which has a price range very much comparable to that at AAMI Park.

Melbourne City Tickets

Tickets for Melbourne City matches can be bought online, by phone, or at the stadium on the day of the match. Prices range from AUD25.00 for a seat behind the goals to AUD55.00 for a central seat at one of the sides.

The ground is unusual as you walk around with its futuristic domes, and as such is perhaps one of the worlds more unusual modern football stadiums. I was situated in the front row in the Richmond end, near a small body of traveling supporters. This meant I had a great view of any goal mouth action, but would have been vulnerable to any rain. Food was available but barely adequate, and at typical stadium prices. The range of Melbourne City souvenirs bordering on laughable made getting back from the ground easy via the tram. Getting back from the ground was easy via the tram, and I was at Southern Cross for my connecting train in extremely good time.

In 2014, I saw a 2-2 draw between Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners.

The stadium is impressive, although I found getting a ticket where I wanted in the ground difficult, but that may be down to me not fully understanding the stadium's internet ticketing system.

Prior to the game, I saw families enjoying themselves in a large park.

I found the stadium to be interesting, but I didn't feel any real excitement while I was there.
