History and description

The Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium was the first proper football stadium to be built in Greece, opening in 1922. It took until 1928 for the first stand to be built, and during its first half of existence, Leoforos was also the standard playing venue of the Greece national team. A post-war record crowd of 29,665 attended an extravagant Cup Winners? Cup match between Panathinaikos and Bayern Munich in 1968.

In 1984, Panathinaikos moved to the new and much larger OAKA Olympic Stadium. They played their remaining matches at the stadium until in 2000 it closed for upgrades for the 2004 Olympics, after which they played their matches again at Leoforos.

Following the Olympics, Panathinaikos moved back to its traditional home of OAKA Stadium and at the same time started exploring the possibilities to build a new stadium. However, these plans lead to nothing though, and in 2013, being unhappy with the much too-large OAKA Stadium, the club decided to move back to their traditional home.

A plan was drawn up to gradually upgrade Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium, but this fell through and in 2018 Panathinaikos moved back into their old stadium, OAKA.
