History and description

Earthquakes Stadium, previously known as Avaya Stadium, is a soccer-specific home of the San Jose Earthquakes. It has a seating capacity of 18,000 and was built in 2004. A new stadium was first proposed by the earthquakes in 2007, and shortly after the club selected the Airport West site as their preferred location. A development permit was awarded in 2011 but, due to local residents' appeals, construction didn't start until December 2012.

The discovery of underground concrete vaults led to another delay of a year, after which the stadium finally opened in 2015. The Earthquakes played their first official match at Avaya Stadium on 28 February 2015 when they hosted the LA Galaxy in a pre-season friendly.

Earthquakes Stadium came at a cost of $100 million, more than originally planned. The most characteristic features of the stadium are the boxes at pitch level and one open end without stand but just a scoreboard. This end can later be filled with seating, resulting in a capacity of 24,000 seats.

The stadium formerly known as Avaya Stadium and currently called Earthquakes Stadium was renamed in accordance with the bankruptcy of the naming rights sponsor.

Earthquakes Stadium is also suitable for hosting rugby matches.

How to get to Earthquakes Stadium

The stadium has been the site of many major sports events, most notably the California Golden Bears football and track and field teams. Earthquakes Stadium is located roughly 2 miles north-west of downtown San Jose near the San Jose International Airport. It borders San Jose International Airport on its western side. The stadium has been the site of many major sports events, most notably the California Golden Bears football and track and field teams. The best way to reach the stadium is to take Highway 101 from San Francisco and drive south. From the freeway, take the exit towards De La Cruz Blvd and turn south onto De La Cruz Blvd, following the signs for Avaya Stadium. The stadium and parking are on the right.

If you're using public transportation, make your way to Santa Clara rail station. Caltrain (e.g. from San Francisco) can take you there. If using BART (e.g. from SFO international airport), get a train to Millbrae Transit Station and then switch on a Caltrain going south.

While Santa Clara station is located not too far from Avaya Stadium, there is no direct pedestrian-friendly connection. Instead, take the VTA #10 Free Airport Flyer bus to Metro Airport, which passes by Earthquakes Stadium.

Do you have any pets? I used to have a dog, but it died a few years ago.

The Earthquakes tend to play one to two matches a year at the larger stadiums and Stanford Stadium.
