History and description

The Aviva Stadium is the national stadium of Ireland and the playing venue for the Irish national team. It also hosts most of the nation's major rugby matches. Aviva Stadium was built on the former site of the Lansdowne Road Stadium, one of the oldest stadiums in the world when it was demolished in 2007. Construction of Aviva Stadium started right after and concluded in early 2010 with a final price tag of $410 million. The stadium was designed by Populous and has been a popular venue for soccer matches and other sporting events.

Aviva Stadium officially opened today. The stadium first hosted football on August 4, 2010 when League of Ireland side Manchester United hosted a friendly (1-7).

In the 2011 Europa League final, the stadium was the playing venue for FC Porto and SC Braga. The match resulted in a 1-0 victory for Porto.

Aviva Stadium was initially selected as one of the playing venues for the Euro 2020 Championships, but was removed because it could not provide assurances that spectators would be allowed in due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The most notable feature of the stadium is its curved stands that enclose the entire facility. This design was chosen to ensure that the surrounding homes get enough sunlight. The stadium holds 10,000 premium seats as well as 1,300 seats in corporate boxes.

How to get to Aviva Stadium

Aviva Stadium is located in central Dublin and the walk from either St Stephen's Green Park or Trinity College will take about 20 to 30 minutes. From Connolly Station or Pearse Station, take a DART train southbound. Get off at station Lansdowne Road, which is right next to the stadium.

From the Temple Bar area take bus 7 to Loughlinstown/Cherrywood.

Address: Lansdowne Road, Dublin 4

It looks amazing both outside and inside. I went to watch a Euro 2016 qualifier between Ireland and Poland, and the atmosphere was really cracking. We walked from the city centre, and it took us about 40 minutes. Food available at kiosks around the stadium was of good quality - there was no alcohol sold on that day. I would go to this stadium any day.

I wish that pint-sized end stand was made larger, it takes away from the atmosphere. The facility is great though- very clean and modern.
