History and description

BC Place was built in 1981 and opened to the public on June 19, 1983. It hosted its first soccer match on that day - a 2-1 victory for the Vancouver Whitecaps over the Seattle Sounders. BC Place was built to serve as a home for the BC Lions and Vancouver Whitecaps, but one year later, the Canadian Football League ceased to exist and soccer disappeared from the stadium.

The stadium's characteristic feature back then was its air-supported domed roof, the largest of its kind in the world. However, during an extensive renovation which took place between 2010 and 2011, it was replaced with a new roof.

This renovation, which cost $563 million, included a general upgrade of seats and facilities, as well as the installation of a centre-hung video board. The retractable roof got replaced by a domed roof in the style of Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena.

BC Place re-opened on 30 September 2011 shortly after the Whitecaps moved in. Generally, the capacity is reduced for Whitecaps matches to 21,000 seats.

How to get to BC Place

BC Place is located on the south-east side of downtown Vancouver, almost on the shore of False Creek. It's a large and popular venue used for concerts, sporting events, and other events. The best way to reach the stadium is by taking the SkyTrain. The station closest to it, Stadium-Chinatown, is located only two blocks away. It is served by trains on the Expo and Millennium Lines.

Do you think BC Place can be reached by the Skytrain's Canada Line? The Canada Line stop at the Yaletown-Roundhouse station is only three blocks from the stadium, so it would be quite easy to get there. You can also reach the Canada line by travelling to Vancouver City Centre Station, which is neither far away. The Canada line connects with the airport as well.

The surrounding neighborhood is relatively safe and the stadium has plenty of parking.
