History and description

Today, the stadium can only accommodate around 50,000 spectators. The Cairo International Stadium, originally called Nasser Stadium, opened in 1960. At the time it could hold over 100,000 spectators. However, unofficial attendances could reach over 120,000. Today, the stadium can only accommodate around 50,000 spectators. The large refurbishment of the stadium in 2005 was in preparation for the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations that were held in the country. During the tournament, it hosted, among others, the opening match and the final.

The stadium has a capacity of over 80,000. The Cairo International Stadium is one of the venues that the Egypt national team regularly uses. Although it is not the permanent home of any club team, various Cairo-based clubs, such as top clubs Al Ahly and Zamalek, use the stadium for their high-profile matches. These clubs otherwise play their home matches at smaller stadiums across Cairo or elsewhere in the country. The stadium has a capacity of over 80,000 people.
