History and description

It has a capacity of over 64,000 people. The Arena Castelão, originally called the Estádio Governador Plácido Aderaldo Castelo, opened on 11 November 1973 with a match between Ceará and Fortaleza (0-0). It has a capacity of over 64,000 people. The stadium had a groundbreaking ceremony on September 7, 1958 and was inaugurated three months later on December 3. The stadium was built by the state governor Plácido Castelo and it was named after him. It was inaugurated three months later on December 3.

Castelão originally consisted of one continuous Oval-shaped tier and large ramps on both sides. The stadium did not have cover yet, and could hold about 70,000 fans.

In 1980, the upper tier of the stadium was extended over the entire stadium. Soon after, an international between Brazil and Uruguay was held.

The stadium received renovation in 2002 and subsequent cover in brought back capacity to about 60,000.

Not long after that, Castelão was chosen as one of the venues for the 2014 World Cup, and therefore needed a more substantial redevelopment.

A new roof was installed on the stadium in early 2011. The stadium reopened on 16 December 2012, after being renamed Arena Castelão.

In the 2014 World Cup, Arena Castelão hosted four first round group matches, a Round of 16 match, and the quarter-final between Brazil and Colombia.

How to get to Arena Castelao

The Arena Castelão is located in the south of the city of Fortaleza, about 10 km from the Dragão do Mar area and nearby Iracema beach and a similar distance from the beaches in the east. Fortaleza recently opened a new metro line that does not go directly to Castelão. The stop Parangaba is in the direction, and there are taxis or local buses you can take to get there.

Get off at the stop named Estádio Castelão. From the central bus station, take bus 666 to get to the stadium. Take the bus from the Rua Pedro I at the corner of the Rua Solon Pinheiro. Take the bus that goes to Jardim Castelão. Get off at the stop named Estádio Castelão.

Fortaleza's airport lies to the south-east, approximately 3.5 kilometres north of the stadium. This makes it a reasonable taxi ride away.

Address: Avenida Alberto Craveiro s/n, Castelão, Fortaleza

Eat, drink, and sleep near Arena Castelao

The Arena Castelão is located in an unattractive area, which is a mix of working-class basic residential housing and small business. There is therefore little reason to head to the stadium much before the start of the match, especially since central Fortaleza offers plenty of entertainment. East of the city center, the Dragão do Mar and Iracema beach area is where most of the eating, drinking, and nightlife is located. Going further east along the coast along Avenida Beira Mar will take you to the Mereiles area. If you prefer a quieter beach or areas better suited for bathing or surfing, you may want to head to the eastern Praia do Futuro beaches.

If you want to stay close to the Arena Castelão, then Hotel Recanto Wirapuru is a decent option. Look here for an overview of other hotels near the Arena Castelão.

However, if you make Fortaleza a stopover, you will likely get more out of your stay if you choose a hotel in a more central and touristy area.

There are many hotels located on the coastal strip east of the city center along Iracema beach and Mereiles. Again, the alternatives are the quieter eastern Praia do Futuro (I and II) beaches.
