History and description

Nottingham Forest moved to the City Ground in 1898 after unsuccessfully trying to find a permanent home in previous decades. They were initially rejected by several football clubs before being accepted by the Notts County Board of Directors. The City Ground officially opened on September 3, 1898. It was initially a rather small ground consisting of mainly wooden stands.

Some new improvements were made in the following decades, mainly in expanding the terraces, but the ground only really started to develop from the 1950s. The first was a new East Stand (later Executive Stand), which opened in 1957.

This is a new record and makes the City Ground the sixth best attended ground in England. Starting the season off with a bang, 49,946 City fans turned out to see Forest play Manchester United on opening day. This brings the City Ground up to fifth place on the list of best-attended grounds in England, behind only Arsenal, Anfield, Stamford Bridge, and Old Trafford.

In 1962, a fire heavily damaged the main stand. The stand was successfully restored six years later and could hold about 43,000 people. Six years later, another fire completely destroyed the same stand, which was subsequently rebuilt. At that time, the stadium could hold about 17,500 people who were seated.

The success of Brian Clough's era paved the way for later developments, which resulted in the construction of the large Executive Stand in 1980. The Brian Clough Stand was later renamed in honour of Forest's most successful manager.

Season ticket holders were given the first opportunity to buy tickets for the new stand in the early 1990s. In 1994, a new all-seater stand was built at the Trent End of the ground.

The City Ground was one of the venues where the European Championships took place in 1996. Three group matches were played here during the tournament's first round.

Recently, the club has been investigating the possibility of building a new stadium. These investigations once had a concrete aspect as part of England 2018 World Cup bid, but the failed bid and ongoing resident opposition at proposed locations have thus far stalled any progress.

How to get to the City Ground

The City Ground is located in the south of Nottingham, on the banks of the river Trent. It is situated at just 1.5 miles from Nottingham's rail station and only slightly further from Nottingham's Market Square. The walk will generally take less than half an hour. The stadium is located across the road from the historic Trent Bridge Cricket Ground and lies only a few hundred metres away from Meadow Lane, the home of Notts County. These two stadiums are the two closest stadiums in England.

Skylink buses connect the stadium with East Midlands Airport. The trip takes about 35 minutes.

I am 13 years old and this is the best place on earth for me. I love the forest, and though I'm terrified of heights, the staff were really understanding and empathetic. My little brother was with me on my first ever match, and on the train home he said that was way better than skegness and that was huge.

However, the Brian Clough stand is iconic, the away end seems well designed, and I like how it lowers to fit in with the other side of ground. All in all, a great ground, disappointed though on a boiling hot day someone turned the water off in the ground?.
