History and description

The Estadio Único Ciudad de la Plata is a stadium in the city of La Plata that has been the home of Estudiantes de la Plata since 2006. In 2003, the city started working on a new stadium plan and in 2004 an agreement was made with a private company to build and manage the stadium. The stadium was completed in 2007.

Construction of the new stadium started in 1998, but soon after an economic crisis hit Argentina, construction was forced to a halt due to funding problems.

In 2003, work resumed on the stadium and it officially opened on 7 June. Unfortunately, the planned roof wasn't installed yet.

Both clubs from La Plata, Estudiantes and Gimnasia, initially decided to stay at their own ground, but when these failed to meet safety requirements in 2006, they were forced to move to Estadio Ciudad de la Plata.

Gimnasia moved back to its traditional home after making the necessary changes to its Estadio Juan Carlos Zerillo in 2008.

Estudiantes stadium project stalled until 2019 and the team had to move back to their traditional home due to legal challenges.

In 2008, the governor of the Buenos Aires province decided to complete the unfinished works on the stadium, including construction of the roof and several VIP facilities. The renovated stadium opened early in 2011.

Shortly thereafter, Estadio Ciudad de la Plata played host to one of the Copa América's opening matches, as well as two group matches and a quarterfinal.

The stadium has a retractable pitch which, when retracted, enables it to be used for multiple purposes without damaging the pitch. This is especially true in recent years, as the stadium has become one of the principal concert venues of Argentina.

How to get to Estadio Ciudad de la Plata

The Estadio Ciudad de la Plata is located in the west of the city of La Plata, about 3.5 kilometers from the central Plaza Moreno and cathedral. It lies about 5 kilometers south-west of La Plata's rail station and bus terminals. From Buenos Aires, you can get to La Plata by train or bus. Trains leave from the rail station Constitución and buses from the terminal Retiro. The trip will generally take between one and one-and-a-half hours.

From La Plata railway station, you can reach the stadium with bus O16 or E45. Both buses pass right by the stadium on Avenida 32. Bus O24 is an alternative, which passes the stadium on the other side on Calle 526.

There are three bus options from Plaza Moreno that will take you to the stadium. Bus N13 goes down Calle 526, while bus 506R41 goes down Avenida 32. Both buses pass by the stadium.

If you witnessed the fan incident, you were very lucky. I've never seen any in the last 15 years. Downtown La Plata is a very cool area, with a lively bar and cuisine scene. Have a good day and come back soon!.

I hope you haven't seen the recent fan altercation downtown La Plata. I've never seen anything like it in the last fifteen years, and I really love the district - its bar & restaurant scene is vibrant and cool. Come back soon!

We asked about taxis but luckily enough the man behind the ticket office gave us a lift back to Buenos Aires for a about £10! It only takes 30 minutes by road to the center of Buenos Aires. We really should have spent more time in La Plata because it looked quite a nice place, but this was our first game of our five game trip and we had landed in Buenos Aires in the morning after the 14 hour flight from London.
