Each year, San Diego Comic-Con gathers thousands of dedicated comic book fans from around the world to celebrate their passion and enjoy the latest in comic book and multi-genre entertainment. This international convention has become so popular that it has even spawned its own subculture of super fans who come to conventions not just to see their favorite characters on the big screen, but also to buy merchandise, socialize, and meet other like-minded individuals.
I am willing to bet that even if you have never been to Comic-Con, you can close your eyes and picture what it looks like.
And, in recent years, it's become a much more complex and comprehensive experience for both fans of comics and pop culture in general.
Comic-Con has come a long way over the years. It used to be just a small event with a few comic book fans from San Diego back in 1970. However, as the years went on it grew into what is now one of the biggest conventions in the world! It takes place over 4 days (usually from Thursday to Sunday) at the San Diego Convention Center, and it has lots of different activities for both fans of comics and pop culture in general.
The people behind Comic-Con International have founded several other conventions, including Comic-Con and Wonder-Con. They also put on annual events called SAM: Storytelling Across Media and Comic-Con Museum. This shows how busy these people are.
This is especially true when you add a free streaming site, like CON TV, to the mix. Offering hundreds of hours of on-demand entertainment, TV series, movies, documentaries, and even several live TV channels available to stream for free, CON TV offers so much more than your average streaming site.
CON TV viewers are able to enjoy plenty of classic movies and TV series, sure, but they're also able to take advantage of a growing list of CON TV original series, as well as exclusive Comic-Con footage. This is especially useful during convention season, as CON TV serves as either a supplementary way for guests to enjoy the convention, or a means to connect with the convention in the case that you are unable to make it.
CON TV is technically a free streaming site, but it does operate on a freemium model. So, anybody can enjoy much of CON TV's awesome, unique content without even needing to log in; however, to take advantage of everything that CON TV has to offer, you will need to subscribe as a premium user and pay a monthly fee. Premium CON TV members enjoy access to all of the site's movies and TV shows, as well as a completely ad-free experience. For serious fans of comic book culture, sci fi, horror, and action, this might just be the premium TV and movie streaming site that you have been waiting for. What's great about it is that you can get a feel for it without having to pay--the base level version of the site is free for everyone.
There are countless free TV streaming sites out there - is CON TV worth your time and energy, or is it one that you may be fine with simply skipping over? Well, ultimately, of course, that decision will be yours. I am here, though, to walk you through CON TV, to give you a better sense of the content, user experience, and overall quality of this free TV streaming site. This way, you don't have to waste a minute of your time.
So, does CON TV really deserve its spot on my list of the best free TV streaming sites? Well, let's take a closer look and figure that out once and for all, shall we?
History
Since Comic-Con first happened in 1970, CON TV didn't launch until much more recently, in March of 2015. It was a hit almost instantly, and is a joint venture between Wizard World and Cinedigm.
CON TV struck a deal with Twitch in November of 2017, which made its streaming TV channel, "Always On," available 24/7. This is only one of three live channels that are currently available on CON TV. The other two are "Bambu TV" (offering Chinese movies and TV), and "Anime TV" (that's pretty self-explanatory, I think). The flagship Live TV channel airs content that is also available on-demand on CON TV, but in a linear fashion.
Since inception, CON TV has been one of the most popular free streaming sites on the internet. From its sleek and modern design to its high-quality content, it's easy to see why so many people are drawn to this site. Let's take a look at what sets it apart from other streaming sites.
Design
CON TV breaks from tradition with its design - almost every TV and movie streaming site I visit offers a spin on the iconic Netflix layout, with movies and TV shows separated by category, each with some sort of side scrolling menu? CON TV is designed more like a comic book than traditional streaming site, with huge images of characters and scenes on the right side of the screen.
This is true both in the colorful and somewhat disorienting (but still orderly) layout of the site. But it is also true when you look at how the site asserts itself in slides. Instead of scrolling down a static page, in other words, CON TV allows you to click through, up and down, from one slide to the next. Each click of the arrow brings you into a whole new world, in a sense. Instead of breaking up their library of titles by ?Popular Releases,? ?Latest.? ?Trending,? etc., CON TV allows for one title to be featured at a time. This single title takes up the entire slide.
Alongside the featured show or movie, you will find a more familiar side-scroll of related content. Click the ?down? arrow in order to have everything - the background, theme, and browsable library - change to accommodate the next featured show or movie. This is a dynamic, responsive, and downright fun free TV streaming site design that I have never seen before.
I find this approach, although not my personal preference, to be more successful for comic books than a more traditionally designed site.
Even though the site is cluttered and disorienting at first, it is not less intuitive or user friendly. Although I don't usually like a cluttered site design, I think that it works in this case - partially, because user experience is not hindered by it at all? But also because it fits the content. Comic books are somewhat chaotic and all over the place. Site design borders the realm of art when it mirrors or echoes the content it delivers. I find this approach, although not my personal preference, to be more successful for comic books than a more traditionally designed site.
Content and Features
So no matter what interests you, there's bound to be something here that fits the bill.
There is a lot of content on CON TV. The majority of it falls into the genres of action, anime, animation, fantasy, horror, martial arts, sci fi, or video games. But you will also find plenty of behind-the-scenes series dealing directly with Comic-Con and classic films and TV series too. So no matter what interests you, there is probably something here that fits the bill.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
The Con TV streaming service is widely available and offers an excellent desktop and mobile experience. There are great apps for iOS, Android, Roku, Xbox, AppleTV, and most Smart TVs out today.
