History and description

Couta Pereira raised funds and negotiated to buy part of the Parque da Graciosa. The land was re-zoned and Coritiba was able to build a new stadium on it. In the early 20th century, Coritiba played its matches at a leased site at the Parque da Graciosa. The club had built a small stadium, but president Couta Pereira desired to build a proper stadium on land that Club owned. Couta Pereira raised funds and negotiated to buy part of the Parque da Graciosa. The land was re-zoned and Coritiba was able to build a new stadium on it. A stadium was found in the Alto da Gloria area and through various means loans were obtained to build it. Estádio Couto Pereira, then still named Belfort Duarte, opened on 20 November 1932 with a match between Coritiba and América.

Despite plans for an extensive reconstruction of the stadium, it was ultimately vetoed by the local state government.

Aryon Cornelsen, the president of the club, brought great ambition to the new stadium project. He intended for it to become the third largest stadium in Brazil after Maracaña and Morumbi.

Work on the new stadium began in January 1958 and by October of that year the first stage of the project had been completed. However, due to bureaucratic problems, finances deteriorating, plans had to be adjusted, and in 1963 Cornelsen left the club, progress stalled due to these issues and by 1971 the stadium was incomplete.

Evangelino da Costa Neves breathed new life into the project in the late 1960s, and by the end of that decade both sides of the stadium had been completed.

The stadium was originally built with two three-tiered stands, but it took many years for the second one to be finished.

In the last few decades, Estádio Couto Pereira underwent small changes, among which a large refurbishment in 2005. This refurbishment included the installation of new green and white seats and vip boxes on the main stand.
