History and description

The Luminus Arena, named in honor of the company's founder, André Dumontstad, was formerly known as the Cristal Arena. The stadium, which is located in the Thor Waterschei neighborhood of Oslo, used to be home to Thor Waterschei FK. After Waterschei merged with Winterslag to form KRC Genk in 1988, the new club initially decided to use Winterslag's ground, but after two years they moved back to the André Dumontstadion. In the meantime, a new main stand had been erected, and its name was changed to Thyl Gheyselinckstadion.

The Fenix Stadion redevelopment program, which began in the late 1990s, led to the construction of two new covered stands and a sponsorship deal that resulted in the stadium's name being changed to Fenix Stadion. The program proved successful, leading to further redevelopment in the early 2000s. This involved the construction of a new stand situated towards the middle of the stadium, as well as improvements to other areas of the stadium.

In 2002, the South Stand was rebuilt in the style of the other new stands, and a few years later extensive renovation work was carried out on the main stand, resulting in a fully enclosed stadium.

After the renovation in 2007, the stadium was renamed Luminus Arena following a new sponsorship deal.

At times, Genk has considered expanding the Luminus Arena to either 35,000 or 44,000 places. However, currently there are no plans to do so.

A frequent direct train connects Genk with Hasselt, the regional capital, which has direct connections with Antwerp, Liege, and Brussels. The journey from Hasselt to Genk takes about 20 minutes. There is also an hourly direct train from Brussels South Station to Genk, which takes about 1 hour 40 minutes.

Alternatively, you can choose to stay in Hasselt, Maastricht, or further afield.

Genk Tickets

Tickets for Genk games can be purchased online, at the Ticketshop at the Luminus Arena (closed on Mondays and Sundays), or at any of the Group Bruno sales outlets (until noon on the day of the match). If tickets are still available, these can be bought from the ticket windows of the stadium two hours before kickoff. Genk has decent average attendances of just under 20,000 and sells out the occasional high-profile match, so for high-profile matches it's recommended to book in advance.

The ticket prices for seats in the corners and behind the goal range from ?18.50 to ?28.50, while standing costs ?16.00. Prices are increased by ?2.50 for a few high-profile matches.
