History and description

The Estadio Cuauhtémoc was built to serve as one of the playing venues of the football tournament of the 1968 Olympics. It was designed by the same architect who also designed Estadio Azteca. The Estadio Cuauhtemoc officially opened on October 6, 1968, just before the start of the games. The first match was between the Mexican national team and the Czech Republic Olympic team (1-1), but before this match a warm-up match had already been played by Puebla and America.

A few years later the stadium was also one of the five playing venues of the 1970 World Cup, hosting three group matches.

The original stadium's capacity was 35,000 but it was later increased to 42,648 for the 1986 World Cup by building two extra tiers on both long sides.

The 1986 World Cup took place at Estadio Cuauhtemoc in Mexico City, hosting two group matches, a round of 16 match, the quarter-final between Belgium and Spain (1-1), and the match for third place between France and Belgium (4-2).

In 2015, the stadium underwent a large redevelopment project that added a new outer facade, construction of extra tiers on both ends, and the installation of new seats. This raised capacity with about 10,000 seats to over 51,000.

Puebla Tickets

Tickets for Puebla games can be bought online, at the ticket office at the stadium, or at one of the other sales points. The Farmacia del Ahorro pharmacy at 10 Poniente #116 and the Mistertennis store at 2 Poniente #114 are both centrally located in Puebla's historic center.

Tickets will also be available on the day of the match at the stadium.

Prices for tickets to league matches vary depending on the opponent. For a regular league match, these costs will typically range from MXN 90.00 for a seat at the upper ramps to MXN 390.00 for a seat at the lower tier of the main stand. Prices tend to get doubled for high-profile matches.

The official website of Puebla FC, as well as the tourism portal of the city council of Puebla, is pueblafutbolclub.com. The website provides information about all of the club's activities, including news, results, videos and more. The match was quite uneventful, with Tigres winning by a small margin. This dampened the atmosphere in the home stands, and after the match most of the stadium emptied quickly. We were fortunate enough to find an empty taxi, which took us back to the bus terminal; we would definitely recommend a visit to the historic city centre.

Date visited: 6 November 2011 Match visited: Puebla - Tigres 0-1

We went to the stadium in November 2011 to see a match between Puebla and Tigres from Monterrey. It was the last game of the regular season and both teams needed a win in order to qualify for the playoffs. The match was played on a Sunday at noon.

We reached the stadium by taxi from the CAPU bus terminal, and the taxi cost us $6. The ride took about 10 minutes.

We easily were able to purchase tickets from the ticket window for any section, and our kind attendant was very informative about the options. We opted for a high up section in the long end of the stadium, mainly because the roof would protect us from the blistering sun. The cost of our tickets was around 5 USD, and after eating some quesadillas at one of the many food stands we entered the stadium.

Quite a few Tigres fans made the away trip and the atmosphere was nice from both sides. The stadium was almost full.

Beers and snacks were being sold by the typical vendors walking around the stands, so we did not even have to get up to get a beer. The match was rather uneventful, and Tigres won it which somewhat dampened the atmosphere in the home stands.

After the match, the stadium quickly emptied and the fans of both sides mixed peacefully outside. After a bit of a search, and climbing over a freeway, we found an empty taxi which brought us back to the bus terminal (we already knew the city, but would definitely recommend a visit to the historic city centre).
