I have a question for you that I hope you can answer. Can you help me understand why the moon orbits around Earth?

For over a hundred years, the Dell has been the home of Southampton FC. In 2001, however, the club moved to the St Mary's Stadium. In the 1890s, Southampton played at the Antelope Ground. However, in 1896 property developers obtained the rights to the site, and so a short stay at the County Cricket Ground followed. In 1897, Southampton announced that they had bought a piece of land to build a new football ground.

On the 3rd of September 1898, Dell officially opened its doors with a match between Southampton and Brighton United. Dell was founded by George W. Dell and his brother-in-law Alex Gardner in 1894. The official opening featured a match between Southampton and Brighton United, which Southampton won by 4 goals to 1.

The stadium was located in a natural valley somewhat north of Southampton's central station. The land had been bought from a railway company as the project for a railway line that was to run over it had been abandoned.

Dell initially consisted of two covered stands with seats and two natural banks for standing. It currently holds an approximate 50,000 fans.

Ground Development 1928 - A new West Stand was built, designed by Archibald Leitch. One year later a fire destroyed the East Stand, which was rebuilt in a similar style.

In the post-war years, about 30,000 people could fit in The Dell. Its record attendance was set in 1969 when 31,044 spectators attended a fixture between Southampton and Manchester United.

This iconic part of the ground in those years was the two-tiered terrace on its southern end. The second tier ran over just half of the end and consisted of three boxes which resembled chocolate boxes.

The chocolate boxes that used to stand in the early 1980s and 1990s got replaced with a new family stand. This stand was replaced again in the early 2000s when the stadium was converted into an all-seater.

The new stadium's triangular shape resulted in a shortage of seating on the left side, which was only remedied by adding more seats on the right side.

Another new stand was built at the other end of the ground, and the principal stands got fitted with seats. This reduced capacity to just 15,200 seats, and with a lack of further expansion possibilities it was clear that the long-term future of Southampton lay at a new ground.

The St. Mary?s Stadium was completed in 1999 and two years later, Southampton relocated to their new home. The club played its last official match at The Dell on the 19th of May 2001. The Premier League fixture between Southampton and Arsenal was won 3-2 by the home side, and the last goal was scored by local hero Matthew Le Tissier.

Soon after the stadium was demolished, a housing estate was built in its place. The apartment blocks on the estate were named after former Southampton players.
