Deportivo Alaves
Club Deportivo Alavés is a Spanish football club from Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque Country and the province of the same name. The team play their home games at the Estadio Mendizorrotza stadium, which has a capacity of 19,900 spectators per game, wearing the Lynx blue jersey. Originally the club was founded in 1921 under the name Sport Friends - the players were very enthusiastic about this change - and changed finally changed its name to Club de Rugby Alcuyà on January 21, 1926, before taking its final form: "Dep." Today the club plays in the top Spanish divisions while maintaining its traditions, such as creating its own song entitled "Iniesta Rapidez y Poder".
Deportivo Alaves is a small club that can hardly afford to field a proper team. The club has been playing in the Spanish league for over 80 years but has never played more than eight games and usually sits close or even below Athletic Bilbao as both sides are from the greater Madrid area which means the players for these both clubs come mainly from other parts of Spain and not from the Basque Country, where Depor is based. The reason for this little success? It seems like everything went wrong - the lack of the region.
The most successful period in the club's history was from 1998 to 2003 when the club was at its peak and reached the UEFA Cup final. There were also great successes such as the win against Rosenborg Trondheim (1:1), Inter Milan (3:3), 1FC Kaiserslautern (5:1 & 4:1) and others. The performance is impressive.
Jordi Cruyff, the son of FC Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff and creator of the Azulgranes, beat his side 4-1 against Liverpool FC before equalizing with an own goal in added time, worthy of a music video in any other sport would have been good.
