History and description

The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 people and is used for football matches, music concerts, and other events. The Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín was built at the initiative of Bogotá mayor Jorge Elecier Gaitán as the city lacked a large sports venue. The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 people and is used for football matches, music concerts, and other events. The land for the stadium was donated by Luis Camacho Martiz under the condition that the stadium be named after his father, Nemesio Camacho. The site had earlier been used as a camp ground, or camping, which gave the stadium its more common nickname.

On 10 August 1938, the stadium opened with a match between Colombia and Ecuador.

By then, El Campín had become an important base for the national football team. El Campín Stadium could initially hold about 10,000 spectators, but this had already more than doubled by the late 1940s. By then, El Campín had become an important base for the national football team.

Further expansion of the football stadium in the early 1950s led to its current capacity of almost 50,000. In 1951, the stadium reopened after having been expanded and now houses both Millonarios and Santa Fe permanently.

After the construction of a second tier in 1969, the capacity gradually increased and reached 62,500 in 1974.

El Campin was extensively refurbished for the 2001 Copa América. The conversion of the stadium into an all-seater reduced its capacity to just over 50,000.

Increased seating in the stadium has resulted in a decrease in the number of people who can attend events there. The last refurbishment to the facilities was done in preparation for the 2011 U-20 World Cup.

In 2019, the local government announced that an extentive redevelopment of the stadium in preparation for the 2021 Copa America would include the construction of a roof over the entire stadium and an expansion to 45,000 seats.
