History and description

In 1921, Leeds United bought the stadium and made it their home; the following year they were promoted to the First Division. In 1996 Leeds United sold Elland Road to Leeds City Council, who then leased it back to the football club. The stadium was laid-up in 1982, but then sold to a property developer in 1984. In 1919, Leeds City were expelled from the Football League and their stadium was sold for £250 to newly formed Leeds United. Shortly after, renovations were made to the stadium. However, alterations were few in the decades following. The stadium lay-up in 1982 but it was later sold to a property developer in 1984.

In 1988, the club moved from their traditional home to Elland Road. In 1956, a fire destroyed the West Stand at Leeds United's ground and new stands had to be built. With the successes of Leeds United in the 1960s and early 70s further renovations were made. In 1988, after moving from their traditional home, Leeds United played their first game at Elland Road.

Elland Road achieved its record attendance in 1967 during an FA Cup match with Sunderland. A total of 57,892 people attended the game from the stands.

The club started a redevelopment program for the ground in the early 1990s. The most notable part of this program was the rebuilding of the East Stand in 1993. At completion, this stand counted as the biggest cantilever stand in the world.

The stadium has a current capacity of 54,000, although this was reduced to 44,000 when the club moved to their new home in 1997. Elland Road was one of the venues that hosted matches during the Euro 1996 Championships. The stadium currently has a capacity of 44,000 people, but it was reduced to that size when the club moved to their new home in 1997.

In the early 2000s, Leeds investigated a move to a brand new 55,000-stadium. After the club's finances severely deteriorated, however, these plans were shelved. Only smaller renovations have been made to the stadium since.

However, I now live in Aberdeen and can't get to every game, but I try to make as many as possible. I took my wife on one of the tours last time we were visiting Leeds United and she enjoyed it greatly. And she's not a big football fan! The tour guide was fantastic, and the staff we saw appeared to enjoy working at Leeds United. I plan on returning March 2016 for a game, and then June of this year to take my kids around the famous stadium. Come on, Leeds United!
