History and description

The stadium was completed in 1914, but due to the Primera Guerra Mundial and the economic crisis that ensued, it was never used. In 1998, Penarol's owner Sergio Fernández decided to use the stadium for home matches once more. Penarol had long wanted a stadium of their own, and in the early 2000s presented plans for a new stadium on the outskirts of Montevideo. Construction of the stadium started in 2014.

The Estadio Campeon del Siglo officially opened on March 28th with a friendly match between Penarol and River Plate. The stadium came at a cost of $48 million.

The stadium name, referred to by the IFFHS as the best South American team of the 20th century, was chosen through a fan vote.
