History and description

The stadium has since been renamed Estadio El Teniente in honor of the military man who fought for the country during the independence wars of Chile. The stadium was originally called Estadio Braden Copper, and it hosted games for the football club, which eventually became known as O?Higgins. To remember the soldier who fought for our country during the independence wars, the stadium's name was subsequently changed to Estadio El Teniente. The 1962 World Cup was held in Brazil. Six first round group matches and the quarterfinal between Czechoslovakia and Hungary were played at the stadium. The stadium wasn?t originally proposed as one of the playing venues, but served as a replacement for a number of other stadiums that had gotten damaged in the 1960 Valdivia earthquake.

In the late 1960s, the Chilean state nationalized Braden Copper Company and thus acquired Estadio Braden Copper. This led to Estadio El Teniente being renamed to match the company's mine.

The stadium still hosts a number of concerts and sporting events each year. Although the Estadio El Teniente didn't undergo nearly as much change as other stadiums in the next decades, it still regularly hosts concerts and sporting events. In 1995, a fire destroyed a few stands and necessitated their rebuilding.

In 2012, the Chilean government presented redevelopment plans for stadiums around the nation. The plans included upgrading the stadium in Santiago, and it was announced that the stadium would be one of the venues for the 2015 Copa America.

The redevelopment of the El Teniente stadium started in 2013 and was completed in April 2014. The stadium was used for two first round group matches during the 2015 Copa America.
