History and description

With seating for over 82,000 spectators, the stadium is one of the largest in Europe. The Estadio La Cartuja de Sevilla was built to serve as the centerpiece venue of the 1999 IAAF Athletics World Championships and also formed part of Seville's failed bids for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. It has a seating capacity of over 82,000 spectators and is one of the largest stadiums in Europe. The stadium, called Estadio La Cartuja, officially opened its doors on May 5th of this year with a friendly international between Spain and Croatia. While the stadium has occasionally been used for football matches, both Sevilla and Betis decided to keep their traditional home stadiums and not move to La Cartuja.

The stadium has hosted a number of internationals, Copa del Rey finals, and the 2003 UEFA Cup final between Porto and Celtic over the years.

The European Championship 2020 playing venue Estadio La Cartuja was chosen after San Mames in Bilbao, Spain was ruled out due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Currently, football matches at the stadium are sparse, but the stadium occasionally hosts concerts and other sports events such as the 2004 and 2011 Davis Cup finals.

How to get to Estadio La Cartuja

La Cartuja stadium is located in the north-western part of Sevilla, at roughly 3.5 kilometers from Sevilla's historic center. The journey takes about 15 minutes.
