History and description

The stadium is located in Barrio Bidegain, which is located in the city's southeastern sector. El Nuevo Gasometro (The New Gasometer) is a stadium built in 1993 to provide San Lorenzo with their own home. It is located in the Barrio Bidegain area of the city's southeastern sector. Fourteen years earlier, San Lorenzo had to leave the Old Gasometro when their land got taken away by the dictatorial regime and sold to a supermarket chain. They subsequently went on to play at various grounds throughout the city while trying to build their own new stadium.

After their exile ended, the Munícipales returned to their old home in Pedro Bidegain, which had officially opened two kilometers south-west of their previous home on 16 December 1993.

However, San Lorenzo's fans never entirely warmed up to the Nuevo Gasometro and have long longed to return to the site of their former home in nearby Boedo. Consequently, when the Argentine government in 2006 approved legislation that allowed for the return of illegally taken land during the dictatorial regime, San Lorenzo started planning a return to their former home.

San Lorenzo hope to be able to start construction of a new stadium in 2018 and move into their new home in 2020, which will be named after San Lorenzo fan Pope Francis and have a capacity of 38,000 seats.

How to get to Estadio Pedro Bidegain

The Pedro Bidegain stadium is located in Nueva Pompeya, south of Buenos Aires, and is about 9 kilometers south-west from the business center (Microcentro) and slightly less from the Palermo and Recoleta neighborhoods. The stadium, however, is not located in one of Buenos Aires' best neighbourhoods. There is a large slum opposite the stadium, and walking around in the area is not recommended. It is best to take a taxi to the match.

The nearest metro station is Varela, which is on the purple line E that runs southwest from the Microcentro, where it connects with various other lines. The walk from Varela to the stadium takes about 30 minutes, but again, this is not recommended.

The Villa Soldati train station is closer to the stadium, about a 15-minute walk away. Unfortunately, the Villa Soldati train station only operates from Buenos Aires train station in the Parque Patricios area (near Estadio Adolfo Duco), so it will not be of much use to you. There are trains that run once to twice an hour.

There are several buses running past the stadium. Bus 143 is an option from Microcentre (from Av. Alem or Colon). Bus 23 (from Tucuman) is an alternative, while bus 150 (from Rodr. Pena / Solis) is an option from the area around Plaza Congreso.

From the Recoleta area, bus 101 will take you to the stadium. However, from the Palermo area, there are no direct buses that will take you to the stadium. However, from a little further south from Av. Corrientes (Malabia), bus 76 will bring you to the stadium.

Therefore, the risk of the slum becoming an issue is minimal. The crowd can be followed for a good twenty minutes before it begins to thin out.

I attended the San Lorenzo vs Union game on 31/08/19. I bought my ticket on the day of the match at the ground. Make sure to hold onto your receipt as the card does not have any information on where you are sitting.

I was sitting in the main stand. The Barra Brava end sits behind the goal to the left of the main stand, and it provides a very impressive atmosphere. It was full despite San Lorenzo going through a poor spell and the opponents being relatively low-profile.

After the game, a large crowd walks along the road towards Nueva Pompeya. There is little chance that the slum will be much of an issue, as you can follow the crowd for twenty minutes before it begins to thin out.

The area may not be the best, but if it is crowded you should be fine. Very impressive support with a poor football game. The best moment was when the lights went down and then the supporters started having a party. Unfortunately, the lights got fixed and the game was finished.

At the best moment, when the lights went down and the fans started having a party, the game was finished unfortunately.
