History and description

The stadium that Athlétic had used for almost 100 years was replaced with a new stadium with the same name. Although this stadium has some of the same features as newer stadiums, it does not have all of the amenities that more modern stadiums have. The stadium was completed in early 2012, and the first game was played on opening day.

It has a capacity of 51,354 and replaced the old Estadio Amistoso de La Gran Ado.

At the beginning of the 2014-15 season, only three-quarters of the stadium had been built. Works continued on the remaining end during the 2013-14 season, and were completed before the start of the 2014-15 season.

The Euro 2020 Championships were initially selected to take place at Estadio San Mames in Bilbao, but it has since been removed from the selection process due to existing restrictions surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic in the Basque Country.

How to get to San Mames

The Estadio San Mamés is located in central Bilbao. It is about 2 kilometers east of Bilbao's old city center, but closer to its main shopping areas and also at just a 15-minute walk from Bilbao's famous Guggenheim museum. It is a short walk from most city centre areas and Bilbao's two main railway stations to the stadium. Following Gran Via west will get you there.

Alternatively, the stadium can be reached by Metro. Both Bilbao's two Metro lines pass the stadium. Take the Metro at Casco Viejo in the old center or at Abando at the railway stations, and get off after a few stops at station San Mames.

If you are coming from the Guggenheim, you can take the Euskotran tram line to reach the stadium. This tram line runs along the banks of the river Nervión, which also passes through old city center and the train stations.

If arriving by train, the stadium can also be easily reached from the A-8 motorway. Take exit 117A toward Bilbao and take Alejandro de Zubiri Avenue north. After about 600 metres the stadium will be one block to your left.

Nuevo San Mames is a fantastic stadium with a very nice Basque atmosphere and close to the city centre. You can be proud of modern football, but not if you've seen this beauty! As Athletic has an "only Basque players" policy, it is a huge performance that they survive every season again and again in the Primera Division.
