FilmOn app has had a recent rough patch. Not only are the services' touch lost with time, but it also does not seem interested in reviving itself. Even today, you will find just 600 channels on the network that were available back in 2017. You will find content from popular platforms such as ITV, CBS, and even BBC. However, what should be your expectations for this app? I would say do not keep them too high.
What is FilmOn Live TV Chromecast?
But even with the app, I found that not all shows are available live and some are only available for a certain amount of time.
FilmOn is a mobile app and website that provides an IPTV-esque experience on devices. After doing some research, I found that if you want to have a complete FilmOn experience, you will need to spend money. There are no ads on FilmOn, but there are some in the app. The app also has a live event viewer so you can watch events as they happen. However, not all shows are live and some may only be available for a limited time.
What should you expect from the FilmOn Live TV Chromecast App?
I've already mentioned the numbers above, and I won't deny that FilmOn does have a lot of content. But it's more of a quantitative approach with the developer having filled the websites with unknown channels which you won't bother to watch. Yes, there is content from popular channels as well, but that's like a fraction of the overall package. Most of the channels and streams you find on this platform won't even meet your viewing needs.
Genre & Content Addition
Although the library in terms of number is impressive, there are a few downsides when it comes to the content available. For instance, you can watch content from a wide range of genres on this platform, such as Action, Horror, Romance, Fantasy, Movies, Music, and Entertainment. However, to access recent releases and the extended library you need to subscribe to the premium network. So yes that's quite a catch when compared to some of the leading streaming services. Stick around because we'll be checking out pricing and plans later in this review.
Streaming Quality
While the streaming quality in and of itself isn't bad, there are quite a few restrictions. For instance, earlier you could stream 720p from a free account. However, now you need to subscribe to the service if you want to stream in SD or HD quality. The deeper you dig, the tighter the shackles get. On the flip side, I can stream a wide range of TV channels from around the world, along with video-on-demand content. But do I want to do it at 480p? Absolutely not.
Acceptable User Interface
Though FilmOn's design may not be the best in the streaming niche, the app still has a clean interface. The desktop site is slightly cluttered, while the app still feels better. In terms of UI/UX,FilmOn has an Everest to climb if it wants to compete with Netflix or Prime Video.
Content Diversification
The app's strong content diversification and easy-to-use guide and schedule make it a great choice for users.
FilmOn Live TV Chromecast App Information
However, if you?re using an older version of Android or on a device that does not have the latest OS, the app may not function properly.
In my opinion, the root of the problem with this app is its neglect by the developer. The last update was nearly three years ago in July 2017. I mean, in an age where premium networks are updating every month, FilmOn's last update was only three years ago. Thus, it's quite hard for me to imagine how the platform managed to rack up more than one million downloads on the Google Play Store. The size of the app varies with devices and if you have an Android version above 4.4.1 you should be good to go; however, if you're using an older version of Android or on a device that doesn't have the latest OS, the app may not function properly.
How to access FilmOn Live TV Chromecast?
To access FilmOn Live TV, search for ?FilmOn App? on the Google Play Store. Click on the link and install the app on your device. You can access FilmOn Live TV on a wide range of platforms, such as PCs, smartphones, tablets, Smart TVs, and even OTT devices such as Roku.
Design
I think the app design is better than the website. But I don't think it's very sensible for the developers to consider it a premium service, because there are ways to make the homepage more attractive without making it feel like a luxury item. The layout and text size on the homepage look big, outdated, and as if they were designed in 2013. The ?Local TV? option doesn't help make it easier to find what you're looking for either.
I have one more issue with the app. Live content plays on the same page, but for on-demand content, the app redirects you to a new page without closing the initial one. This can be confusing because you can't find the content that you're looking for quickly. Also, multiple tabs are not user-friendly.
App Homepage
For example, under the ?Movies? category, you?ll find titles like ?The Fault in Our Stars? and ?Kingsman: The Secret Service.? Additionally, you have the option to add your own movies and TV shows to watch later.
Inner pages
Overall, the app seems like it has potential; however, I feel like the inner pages could be more interesting to browse.
The app has potential, but I don't find the inner pages very interesting to browse. The streaming page allows you to navigate and check out other content while the video is playing, so that's a positive. Under the options, you have the resolution option and the two additional options - Cardboard and full screen - towards the progress bar.
Content
FilmOn is a good service, but it doesn't offer a comprehensive live TV experience. For example, you might want to watch a really bad match, but FilmOn's network TV just works in 14 major US cities. So forget about streaming content in SD or HD quality - you won't get to stream content at all.
The lack of live TV content is the main downside to this streaming service, which makes up for it with on-demand content. You can choose from a wide range of genres and channels, including ITV, BBC, CBS, EDM TV, and Kid Rock's TV. However, because there is so much on-demand content, you would hardly see it as a cord-cutting alternative.
Desktop/Mobile experience
I tried the free and paid versions of the app, and the difference between both was quite evident. The SD viewing experience was below par as the stream kept adjusting itself between 480p and 720p. On top of that, even the audio quality wasn't pristine. In premium versions, the difference is palpable, but it's nowhere near the experience that you get on Prime Video or Netflix. The only positive I can take from the streaming experience is that there were no ads.
Plans & Pricing
FilmOn offers two subscription plans: Monthly and Yearly. The Monthly plan costs around $19.95/month, whereas the Year plan costs around $199/month. If you choose to subscribe on a yearly basis, you will receive two months free.
Suggestions I have for FilmOn
FilmOn needs to get major studios to back it in order to stand out in the cut-throat streaming world. The $20/month subscription fee is hilarious, and the overall service is average at best. Forget me; no sane user would be tempted towards their service and happily agree to pay $20/month for vague content.
Conclusion
I have no interest in the website or the app, and there is no reason for you to use this service over any of the other options on the market. The platform is lacking in content, has an overall weak edge, and does not provide competent streaming. Apart from user-generated titles, there is not much to be found on this platform, and that's about it.
