History and description

Portsmouth F.C. was founded in 1898 and their home ground has been Fratton Park ever since. The club's first match at Fratton Park was a friendly against Southampton. By the 1960s, the stadium had a capacity of over 30,000. However, in the 1990s redevelopment work started that saw the stand on the opposite side closed and replaced with a new stand. The stadium now has a capacity of almost 40,000.

The stadium recorded its highest attendance of 51,385 on a 1949 FA Cup fixture with Derby County.

While Fratton Park hardly changed in the decades following its construction, the only significant change between then and 1997 was the demolition of the Fratton End stand and its replacement with a new all-seater stand.

Over the last two decades, Portsmouth have investigated multiple options to either redevelop Fratton Park, or build a brand new stadium all together. Multiple plans have been presented, but all failed to materialise due to various reasons. No major changes are currently expected due to the limited financial means of the club.

How to get to Fratton Park

The Fratton Park Stadium is located in the east of Portsmouth, just over a mile from the city centre. The stadium is a short walk away from the Rail Station Fratton. Trains run frequently from Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour rail stations in Portsmouth's centre to Fratton. The journey takes only a few minutes.

There is only limited parking in the area around Fratton Park.

Address: Frogmore Road, Portsmouth, PO4 8RA
