History and description

In the 1980s, Glanford Park was built to replace Scunthorpe's Old Show Ground. It was the first new English Football League stadium to be built in over fifty years. The first plans called for incorporating the Old Show Ground's cantilever stand, which was the first cantilever stand to be built in England. However, it was found that a move of the old stand would not be feasible.

The official attendance for the first game was 8,000. The Glanford Park Stadium officially opened on August 14th, 1988 with a friendly match between a Scunthorpe XI and a Football League XI. The stadium was named after Glanford Borough Council who financed it. The stadium cost £2.5 million and the official attendance for the first game was 8,000.

In 2014, the Scunthorpe football team began investigating the feasibility of moving to a new stadium. However, in 2017 they abandoned plans to move and are now looking to redevelop Glanford Park.

How to get to Glanford Park

Glanford Park is located on a retail park on the western edge of the town of Scunthorpe, which is about 2 miles from Scunthorpe?s town centre and a similar distance from Scunthorpe?s rail station, which is located south of the centre. The stadium can be reached by bus from the bus station in the town centre. There are buses that include the 31, 32, 35, 90, and 361. However, service can be infrequent, especially in the evening hours.

Trains connect Scunthorpe with Sheffield and Doncaster. To get to other destinations, a change in Doncaster is necessary.

You can also buy tickets at various other retailers in the town. Tickets are available at the ticket office on the day of the match. Scunthorpe is rarely sold out.

Tickets come in two price categories: Cat B seats, which range in price from £22.00 to £30.00, and Cat A seats, which cost £1.00 more. Standing costs £18.00. Buying on the day of the match is £3.00 more expensive than buying tickets beforehand.
