History and description

FC Twente's old Diekman Stadion was replaced by the Grolsch Veste. This stadium had been built in 1965 but lacked facilities and could not meet modern standards. The stadium has a total capacity of 26,000 and was initially named after the Grolsch brewery. The naming rights were later sold to Philips. Construction of the Grolsch Veste began in January 1997 and it officially opened on the 10th of May 1998 with a league match between Twente and PSV Eindhoven (3-0). The stadium has 26,000 seats and was initially named Arke Stadion after the Grolsch brewery. The naming rights were later sold to Philips.

The stadium could initially hold 14,000 spectators and from the beginning consistently sold out, so Twente started making plans for an expansion right away.

In 2007, works commenced on adding a second tier to half of the stadium in the shape of an L-shape, increasing capacity from 18,000 to 24,000 seats. The new tier was completed one year later, and at the same time the club changed its name to Grolsch Veste.

The Grolsch Veste continued to sell out, and Twente therefore quickly decided to go ahead with the second stage of their plans and expand capacity to 30,000.

Work on the construction project was supposed to be completed by the summer of 2011, but a few weeks before that the roof structure collapsed, leading to the deaths of two workers. The project was halted, and an investigation was conducted. After a delay of a few months, construction continued and was completed in October 2011.

The stadium's management are believed to be hesitant to make any additional major changes to the stadium due to the ongoing economical problems in the Netherlands.

How to get to the Grolsch Veste

The Grolsch Veste is located in Enschede, approximately 4.5 kilometers from the city's main railway station and city center. It is about the same distance from Hengelo, a smaller city located north-east of Enschede. When you reach the traffic lights, turn left and continue driving for about  2.5 kilometers. Turn left after the bridge and the stadium will be on your left.

If using public transport, the Grolsch Veste is best reached by train from either Hengelo's or Enschede's main railway station. The stadium lies next to Enschede Drienerlo train station, which is a 5-minute journey from both stations.

Another bus line connects the stadium with Enschede's main railway station.

Address: Colosseum 65, 7521 PP Enschede

Eat, drink, and sleep near the Grolsch Veste

The Grolsch Veste office park is located on a modern campus not far from the University of Enschede. Nearby is a stadium and leisure center which includes a cinema, bowling, and some food establishments. The city centre of Enschede has a sufficient number of eating and drinking establishments for a night out, but it is not one of Holland's most interesting cities. The city of Hengelo is an alternative, but smaller and quieter than Enschede.

There is one hotel, the Hampshire Hotel, that is located close to the Grolsch Veste. It gets decent reviews, but is not the cheapest. The Conference Hotel Drienerburght is a somewhat cheaper option that is situated a little further away at 15 to 20 minutes walking. Click here to see the overview of hotels near the Grolsch Veste.

Other than a few hotels located in Enschede and Hengelo city centre, there are not many options for lodging when travelling by car.

Twente Tickets

Tickets for FC Twente matches can be bought online or at the ticket office at the stadium. If tickets remain available, they can be bought at the stadium before the match. Twente used to sell out most home matches, but attendances have dropped somewhat in recent years which means that for most matches tickets are rather easily available.

Make sure to check the official website for any restrictions on purchasing tickets if you have a Twente Club Card.

The most expensive tickets are for Category A matches against Feyenoord and PSV, which can cost as much as ?60.00. There is a wide range of price points associated with tickets to sporting events, depending on the opponent. For Category B games - the cheapest - tickets can range from around 17.50 for a seat behind the goal to about 30 US dollars for a lower-tier seat at the long side. For Category A games, prices can be as high as $22.50 or $35.00. The most expensive tickets go for Category A games against Feyenoord and PSV, which can cost up to $60 USD.

There was a sufficient variety of food available, though unfortunately you cannot use cash and have to buy some special coins first (minimum of ?5.00). There was a significant queue in front of the machines during the half-time. We had expected some queues before the train after the match, but these were hardly there and we could get on the first in the direction of Hengelo.

Match visited: FC Twente vs FC Den Bosch Date visited: 31 October 2012

We took advantage of a low-profile cup match to visit the Grolsch Veste.

FC Twente usually sell out and require a club card to buy tickets, but for the cup match, restrictions were eased so that tickets could even be bought before the match at the stadium.

Arriving at the stadium was easy by train, although at least one change in either Almelo or Hengelo is required (if you arrive from the west of Holland).

We arrived early and there was not a long line at the ticket office, though it seemed understaffed and queues quickly formed behind us.

Many people arrived at the stadium in the 15 minutes before the start of the game, but in the end, it was still two-thirds full.

Many people know Twente as a great place to be, but this game was noticeably quieter than usual. The visiting fans started getting louder as they pulled ahead in the second half, and it was overall a really entertaining game.

The concourse at the back of the stand is closed and therefore provides some warmth on a cold winter evening.
