History and description

The new stadium was officially opened on 14th July 2001, with a game between HSV and 1899 Hoffenheim. The new Volksparkstadion was completed in August 2000. It first received the sponsor name AOL Arena, which it kept until 2007, was renamed HSH Nordbank Arena between 2007 and 2010, and then received the sponsor name Imtech Arena until 2015. During the World Cup and other events where the sponsorname could not be used, the stadium went with the name Hamburg Arena.

The Volksparkstadion was one of the playing venues of the 2006 World Cup, during which it hosted four group matches and the quarter-final between Italy and Ukraine (3-0).

The Volksparkstadion hosted the Europa League final in 2010 between Atlético Madrid and Fulham (2-1).

How to get to Volksparkstadion

The stadium was built in 2001 and has a capacity of just over 50,000 people. The Volksparkstadion is located northwest of Hamburg in close proximity to the city's center. It opened in 2001 and holds just over 50,000 people. It's well worth a visit for a match or an event. The stadium lies just a kilometer away from the A7 motorway (which crosses Hamburg north-south), and is thus easily reached by car. Take the exit Hamburg-Volkspark and follow the signs to the stadium. It's well worth a visit for a match or any event.

Public transportation to the stadium can be reached by overground metro (S-Bahn). The stops Stellingen and Eidelstedt both lie reasonably close to the arena, approximately 15 minutes walking. Both lines pass Hamburg's central station and can be taken from several places in the city center.

There are shuttle buses that run from the station Stellingen to the stadium about two hours before each match. There is also a shuttle service from the farther away Othmarschen station on S-Bahn line S11.

Address: Sylvesterallee 7, 22525 Hamburg

Eat, drink, and sleep near Volksparkstadion

Volksparkstadion lies sandwiched between Volkspark, a cemetery, and an office park. While the Volkspark is pleasant on a nice summer day, there is little around in terms of eating and drinking, which can therefore better be done in Hamburg's city center. The Arena Hotel Hamburg is a good option if you want to stay close to the Volksparkstadion. It gets good reviews, and has private rooms as well as dorm rooms. Bedpark Stellingen is another basic option. The Mercure Hotel am Volkspark is a mid-range alternative located on the other side of the Volkspark, though it's harder to reach by public transport.

I attended the HSV vs Cologne game. It was a lower league fixture(the lowest ranked team beat the second from bottom team). The stadium was very nice. After exiting the S-Bahn there is a fifteen minute walk through a park. Tickets were very available on the day I bought mine, but I purchased it about two months in advance and it was delivered to my address in Poland for 26 Euros. The fans from both teams were very vocal.
