History and description

The first goal was scored by Jimmy Speirs. Hampden Park was built in the early 1900s and it is currently a top-club football stadium in Queens Park. The stadium officially opened on the 31st of October 1903 with a match between Queens Park and Celtic (1-0). The first goal was scored by Jimmy Speirs. The stadium was shaped like a bowl, with one covered main stand and vast terraces on all other sides. It then broke several attendance records.

The North Stand at Hampden Park opened in 1937 and the stadium recorded its highest attendance that year when 149,415 fans came to see an international between Scotland and England. A week later, the Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Aberdeen drew an almost similar crowd.

The rest of the seats were used for various events and gatherings. At that time, the stadium had a official capacity of 183,724 but it was only able to hold about 150,000 people for actual matches. The rest of the seats were used for other events and gatherings.

In 1960, a final match between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt was held at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Over 130,000 people attended the game.

Two years later, the stadium hosted the first ever Cup Winners' Cup final between Atlético Madrid and Fiorentina (1-1), which it once again hosted in 1966 (Borussia Dortmund vs Liverpool).

In 1976, FC Bayern would compete in the European Cup final at Hampden Park in Scotland against Saint-Étienne. The stadium was in poor condition and lacked many of the amenities modern stadiums had, causing Bayern to lose 1-0.

In the 1980s, the capacity of Hampden Park was less than 80,000 people. Serious questions were raised about whether the stadium had a viable future, and it was finally decided to extensively redevelop it. This meant rebuilding almost completely.

The construction of the new stadium began in 1991 and it was finally completed in 1999. The Scottish Cup Final of that year was the first match played at the stadium.

In 2002, the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen took place at Hampden Park. In 2007, the UEFA Cup final between Sevilla and Espanyol was also held at Hampden Park.

Hampden Park serves as the Scottish national stadium and is also the annual venue of the Scottish Cup final. It was furthermore selected as one of the playing venues of the 2020 European Championships, hosting three first round group games and a round of 16 match.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Hampden Park

Hampden Park is located in a residential neighbourhood. There are a few pubs and restaurants around, but the options are limited and it may be a better idea to eat and drink in the city centre. The abandoned old Cathkin Park stadium lies just north of Hampden Park, and may be of interest to passersby.

The Number 10 Hotel is an excellent short walk from the stadium. However, it comes in a higher price range than the Ivory Hotel.
