In 1990, the club was relegated to the second division, where they played until 2001. They were promoted back to the first division in 2002 and kept their place there until 2007. San MartÃn reached their first ever Copa Sudamericana final in 2009, but they were beaten by Boca Juniors. The Estadio Ingeniero Hilario Sánchez officially opened on September 9th 1951. At the time, it was just a small ground with wooden stands. Club President Hilario Sánchez led San MartÃn to expand as a club in the 1970s and 1980s, which included the construction of new concrete stands. In 1990, San MartÃn was relegated to the second division where they played until 2001. They were promotion back to the first division in 2002 and have remained there since 2007.
