History and description

Rangers FC moved to Ibrox in 1899 and played their first match at the stadium on the 30th of December 1899. The original Ibrox Stadium was originally oval-shaped, had a track circling the pitch, and mainly consisted of wooden scaffold type terraces. In its first few months, it quickly grew in size to a capacity of 75,000.

In 1902, an international match between Scotland and England was played at Ibrox. However, 51 minutes into the match, the wooden terraces collapsed, killing 26 people. This incident led to the prohibition of wooden scaffold-style terraces in favor of solid earth banking.

After the incident, the scaffolding was removed and capacity was reduced to 25,000. However, the stands were quickly replaced with terraces with a base of earth.

. Ibrox underwent its next major redevelopment in 1928, with the construction of the characteristic red-brick grandstand, designed by Archibald Leitch. The stadium could at that point hold more than 80,000 fans, but was further expanded in the 1930s by increasing the banking of the terraces.

The stadium underwent a renovation in the 1990s that increased its capacity to over 80,000. The record attendance for an Old Firm match was set in 2014 when 150,421 fans attended the match between Rangers and Aberdeen.

A stadium disaster occurred again at Ibrox in 1971, with 66 people killed. This led to the gradual conversion of the stadium into an all-seater, which started with the installation of benches in the North Stand.

The construction of new stands followed the introduction of a new management team in 1978. The first was the Copland Road Stand, which opened in 1978, and was followed by a new West Stand in 1979 and a new Govan Stand in 1981. The original Main Stand was the only one left standing.

Between 1990 and 1997, Ibrox got further improved and expanded with a series of smaller extensions and refurbishment of the main stand. The works were capped with installation of two Jumbotron screens in the two remaining empty corners.

I took the bus from the airport to the ground and then a taxi back. The atmosphere was very good and the fans were very vocal. I always loved Rangers and watching them live was something I'll never forget.

were great as well.

I witnessed the disaster of 1971. It will never be able to remove from my memory the trajedy of that evening. God bless you all.

It is a long journey, but you have a better chance of getting a seat on the train. After the match, there will be queues at Ibrox Station.

road even though they are actually on the left. Apart from the surrounding buildings being in the wrong places, the cars all seem to be driving on the right road even though they are actually on the left.

Otherwise a great website

The night the European Cup Winners Cup trophy was brought back to the Stadium and especially the semi final against Bayern Munich was a great night. Ibrox is a great place to see a great club and I had so much fun playing against Celtic in many games.
