History and description

The Portland Timbers have been playing their home games at Providence Park since 2010. The stadium was built in 1926, but sports have been played there since 1893. Providence Park officially opened on 9 October 1926 with an American football game. Over the following decades the stadium was used for dog races, cricket, American football, and other events. From the 1950s onward, Providence Park became a prime venue for baseball matches.

The stadium underwent a renovation in 1981 that included the installation of a wood-beamed roof, which was a rare feature at the time due to the high costs of timber.

In 2001, the stadium underwent further upgrades that included hospitality facilities and was made "earthquake-proof". This resulted in the stadium being renamed PGE Park as a result of a naming rights deal.

Portland Timbers? admission to Major League Soccer has prompted a $40 million renovation program to make the stadium ready for top-level soccer matches.

A new playing surface, additional seating areas, and improved facilities were built for the stadium in 2010. These changes made the stadium unsuitable for baseball matches, but it is still being used for American football. New sponsor Jeld-Wen was introduced in 2014 but was replaced a year later with Providence Park following a new deal.

In 2017, the Portland Timbers announced plans to construct a new East Stand that will increase stadium capacity by 4,000 seats and cost $55 million. The stadium works started at the end of 2017 and are expected to be completed before the start of the 2019 MLS season.
