History and description

The José Alvalade stadium was built with the purpose of hosting the Euro 2004 soccer tournament and serving as a new home for Sporting Club. It was built right next to the old José Alvalade stadium, which had served as Sporting Club's home for many years. The Jose Alvalade Stadium was officially opened on August 6, 2003 with a friendly match between Sporting and Manchester United.

The European Championships took place at the stadium over the course of three days. It hosted three first round group matches, a quarter final, and the semi-final between Portugal and the Netherlands.

In 2005, the UEFA Cup final was played at Estadio Jose Alvalade between CSKA Moscow and Sporting. CSKA Moscow won 3-1.

How to get to Estadio Jose Alvalade

The José Alvalade Stadium is located in the north of Lisbon, about 7 kilometers from the historic center and only two kilometers from Estádio da Luz. The stadium is located next to the E1 motorway. To get to the stadium, take exit 5 Campo Grande.

The Jose Alvalade XXI can hold up to 50,000 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Portugal.
