History and description

President Amalfitani, during the early 1940s, bought a plot of land from the western railroads located in a swamp area. Many deemed the waterlogged soil to be useless and Vélez was without a permanent home for many years. Despite the president's efforts, the land was drained in two years time and then a new stadium, Fortín, was built. The stadium officially opened on April 11th, 1943 with a match between Vélez and River Plate.

Construction of a proper stadium started four years later. The works finished another four years later and on the 22nd of April 1951, a first match was played at the completed stadium.

In 1978, Estadio Jose Amalfitani underwent renovations to conform with FIFA requirements for the upcoming World Cup. At the same time, its capacity increased to its current total. During the World Cup, the stadium hosted three matches in the first group stage.

It is still one of the most well known and popular stadiums in North America.

How to get to Estadio Jose Amalfitan

The Estadio Jose Amalfitani is located in the Liniers area in the far west of Buenos Aires (Capital Federal). The distance from Buenos Aires' city centre, Microcentro, is about 14 kilometres. The stadium lies just a few blocks off Avenida Rivadavia, which starts in the centre at Plaza de Mayo and runs all the way west.

Eat, drink, and sleep

The stadium is located in the same area, however it is not worth the visit. The only thing of interest to see is the facade which is quite ornate. While there are restaurants and bars near by, visitors should head to central Buenos Aires for dining and drinking. The only attraction of the stadium is its facade, which is quite ornate.
