History and description

It has been extensively renovated and updated over the years, most recently in 2013 when it was renamed Khalifa International Stadium in recognition of the country's new ruler, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani. Khalifa International Stadium has been Qatar's principal football stadium since 1976. The stadium was built to serve as the flagship venue for the 1976 Gulf Cup that was held in Qatar and has been extensively renovated and updated over the years, most recently in 2013 when it was renamed Khalifa International Stadium in recognition of Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar's new ruler. The stadium has been upgraded several times, the most notable of which was for the 2006 Asian Games, which increased its capacity to 40,000 seats.

Khalifa International Stadium hosted multiple matches during the 2011 Asian Cup including the final between Japan and Australia (1-0).

Khalifa International Stadium has been the standard playing venue for the Qatar national team, and it has occasionally hosted international friendlies of other teams.

Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup in 2010, and as a result Khalifa International Stadium needed to be extensively upgraded.

The new roof membrane is made of a lightweight membrane that can be easily adjusted, has a fire-resistant coating, and prevents rain or snow from entering the stadium.

The World Cup stadium was completed in the summer of 2017, making it the first 2022 World Cup stadium to be finished.

The championships were an important event in the sporting calendar, and attracted a large crowd of spectators. In 2019, the Khalifa International Stadium was the venue of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics. These championships were an important event in the sporting calendar and attracted a large crowd of spectators.
