Description

Kirov Stadium was part of a reconstruction project to help heal the city of Saint Petersburg, which was then called Leningrad, after World War II. The stadium was built on Krestovsky Island bordering the Gulf of Finland and could initially hold about 100,000 spectators.

Kirov Stadium officially opened on July 30th, 1950 with a match between two teams from the city of Leningrad. Shortly after, on the 19th of August, the stadium recorded its highest attendances when 115,000 witnessed Zenit take on CSKA Moscow. Extra space was created to accommodate the over-capacity crowd.

A number of refurbishments have been carried out at Kirov Stadium over the years, most notably for the 1980 Olympics. However, there have been few major changes to the stadium since then, meaning that its capacity has decreased to about 80,000.

In the early 1990s, Zenit left Kirov Stadium and moved to Petrovsky Stadium. In 2006, due to the unavailability of Petrovsky, Zenit played one last match at Kirov Stadium. The official last match at the stadium was played on August 17th between Petrotrest and Shelkova (0-3).

The new stadium for Zenit, which finally opened in April 2017, received a lot of protests as demolition of the old stadium left many local architects lobbying for its preservation. In the end, however, the construction of the new stadium went ahead without any objection.

than the older one. Tim Kersher wrote: 25 November 2014 at 11:45 PM Regrettably, this stadium is quite bleak. It looks much like the history of Soviet Union?s society?. The new stadium represents the grandeur of Saint Petersburg far better than the older one. than the old stadium ever could. A cold, Soviet story. This stadium is bleak much like much of the Soviet Union's history? The new stadium represents the grandeur of Saint Petersburg much better than the old stadium ever could.
