History and description

It has a capacity of 48,000 people. The Stade Roi Baudouin (French), Koning Boudewijnstadion in Dutch or King Baudouin Stadium in English is the largest stadium of Belgium and the stadium where the Belgian national team play most of their home matches. It has a capacity of 48,000 people. Construction of the Stade Roi Baudouin began in 1929 with the intention of providing a stadium that could accommodate a variety of sports. On 23 August 1930, one hundred years after Belgian independence, the stadium was officially inaugurated.

On 14 September, three weeks after the stadium's grand opening, a Belgium-Netherlands international football match was played there. With King Leopold in attendance, the stadium could hold over 70,000 spectators.

The stadium was built on the site of a former mine and as a result, it is said that some of the materials used in its construction were mined from the site. The stadium became notorious for its fatal events on May 29th 1985 when 39 Juventus fans were killed after being mistreated by Belgian police. Heysel Stadium was renamed after the local area, Heysel Plateau, and the mine it was built on. It's said that some of the materials used in construction came from this site- specifically, coal and iron ore. The stadium became well-known for its fatal incidents on May 29th 1985 when 39 Juventus fans were killed after Belgian police mistreated them.

The Heysel Stadium underwent its first major redevelopment in 1974. The new all-seater covered stand got built, and the stadium regularly hosted European Cup finals in those years. However by the mid 1980s, the state of the stadium had severely deteriorated, contributing to the Heysel Stadium disaster of 1985.

A 39-person death toll resulted from a collapse of a wall meant to escape the bounds of the stadium during a soccer match. As the match continued, English teams were subsequently banned from European competitions for 5 years due to the negligence of their organizers.

After a few years of deliberation, the city of Brussels decided to renovate the stadium in 1994. This coincided with the stadium's name change to Stade Roi Baudouin - Koning Boudewijnstadion.

In 2000, the opening match of Euro 2000 was hosted by Stade Roi Baudouin in conjunction with two more matches in the group stage, a quarter-final, and the semi-final between France and Portugal (2-1).

Apart from the disaster final in 1985, three other European Cup finals were played at the stadium: the first in 1958 between Real Madrid and AC Milan (3-2), the second in 1966 between Real Madrid and Partizan Belgrade (2-1), and the third in 1974 between FC Bayern and Atlético Madrid (1-1 and 4-0 in the replay).

This stadium has hosted four Cup Winners' Cups finals, the first in 1964 between Sporting and MTK Hungária, the second in 1976 between Anderlecht and West Ham United, the third in 1980 between Valencia and Arsenal, and the last in 1996 at the newly renovated stadium between Paris Saint-Germain and Rapid Wien.

Despite the renovation of Stade Roi Baudouin in the 1990s, the stadium has significantly aged over time and the city of Brussels therefore began to study the possibility of either redeveloping the current stadium or building a new one. In the end, they chose to partner with local side Anderlecht to build a new stadium.

Construction of the new Eurostadium was expected to start in the summer of 2016 and to be completed in 2019, but new delays have thrown doubt on the realisation of the project.

The Eurostadium is set to be built if the Stade Roi Baudouin is demolished in 2020.
