The first match was held on 12 August 1947 between SK Brann and IFK Göteborg, but the game had to be abandoned after only 16 minutes due to torrential rain. In 1961, Rosenborg celebrated several successes and its popularity increased rapidly. As a result, a first major upgrade was necessary. Between 1961 and 1963, two new concrete stands were built and a few years later floodlights were installed.

The record attendance for a Norwegian Cup match at Lerkendal was 28,569 people in 1985.

In 2002 a new stand named after the chairman of the club (Dr. Werner Kühn) was completed and the stadium capacity was increased to 26,000 seats. Since then, few changes have been made to the stadium.

Soon, Champions League money started flowing in and funding became available for a major redevelopment. Two new stands opened in 2001 and in the following year, a new main stand was built opposite the Adidas Stand.

It also has 106 curtains and two rain shelters. The new Lerkendal Stadium opened its doors on October 6th, 2002 with a match against Stabæk. The stadium features 1,338 VIP seats, as well as 106 curtains and two rain shelters.
