However, various proposals for the stadium failed due to transportation issues and in 2006, the 49ers decided to build a new stadium in Santa Clara instead.

Construction of the stadium took nearly two years, and Levi's Stadium officially opened on July 17, 2014 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The stadium cost $1.2 billion.

The San Jose Earthquakes played their first match in their new home, Levi's Stadium, against Seattle Sounders on 2 August 2014. The Earthquakes will play one game a year at the stadium for the first five years and their regular home is Avaya Stadium in San Jose.

Levi's Stadium is regularly used for national team matches and hosted the final of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

How to get to Levi?s Stadium

Levi's Stadium is located in Santa Clara, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley, just north of San Jose and about 40 miles south of San Francisco. Levi's Stadium is close to several major highways, including US Route 101 to the south (connecting with San Francisco and San Jose), California State Route 237 to its north, and the Interstate 880 to its east (connecting with Oakland).

If using public transport, the stadium can be reached by taking the VTA Light Rail. This local light rail system connects the stadium with places like Mountain View, Sunnyvale, San Jose Airport, and San Jose. Great America station is the closest station to Levi's Stadium.

San Francisco typically takes 80 minutes to get to, but there are some faster services that make the journey in 50 minutes. The light rail journey to Great America takes another half an hour.

From the East Bay area, including Oakland, Berkeley and further afield Sacramento, take a Capital Corridor train to Santa Clara - Great America station. Trains run about every 1.5 - 2.5 hours on the weekends.

If you're looking to explore destinations further east, including Stockton and Santa Clara - Great America, then taking an ACE train can be a helpful option. All of these trains stop at the Santa Clara - Great America station, which makes traveling between these areas easy.
