History and description

It was built on the same site as the original Genoa racecourse and cost around 330,000 lire to construct. Stadio Luigi Ferraris was built in 1910 after Genoa societate Musso Piantelli came up with the idea to use the ground inside a racecourse for a football pitch. His proposal got accepted and the new stadium opened on January 22, 1911. It was built on the same site as the original Genoa racecourse and cost around 330,000 lire to construct. The stadium originally consisted of one wooden stand, but it quickly got expanded in the 1920s and 1930s to a capacity of about thirty thousand places.

In 1933, the stadium was renamed to Stadio Luigi Ferraris in honour of the former captain of Genoa who had died in World War I.

The stadium hosted the round of 16 match between Spain and Brazil three days later at the 1934 World Cup.

Until 1946, the Stadio Luigi Ferraris was Genoa's sole home stadium. However, when Sampdoria was founded that year, they requested to share the ground with Genoa and this was accepted by Genoa.

During the following decades, the stadium gradually expanded to a maximum capacity of about 55,700 people in the 1980s.

The Stadio Luigi Ferraris was completely rebuilt for the 1990 World Cup. Construction of the new stadium, designed by architect Vittoria Gregotti, started in 1987 and was completed in 1989. This gradual construction allowed Genoa and Sampdoria to keep playing at the stadium while the work was taking place.

The World Cup saw three group matches and the round of 16 match between the Republic of Ireland and Romania take place at the stadium.

Over the past decade, only minor renovations have been made to the stadium. Due to this, Genoa and Sampdoria have begun looking into either redeveloping Stadio Luigi Ferraris or building a brand new stadium. At this time, however, there are no concrete plans in place.
