History and description

The Stadion Maksimir was built in 1912 and opened on May 5th of that year, though it initially only had a single stand. Stadion Maksimir is Zagreb's prime sports stadium, and HA?K Gra?anski played its first decades there before being quickly expanded and turned into Dinamo's home. In 1948, Dinamo moved in.

Stadion Maksimir was a bare bowl-shaped stadium that consisted mostly of terraces in the post-War years. The stadium had a capacity of about 45,000.

In 1976, the stadium hosted the European Championships semi-finals between Czechoslovakia and Netherlands (3-1) and the match for third place between the Netherlands and Yugoslavia (3-2).

The Stadion Maksimir underwent major redevelopments in 1997 and 1998. First, the East and South stand were rebuilt, and one year later it was the turn of the North Stand to get reconstructed. At the same time, all remaining standing areas were converted into seats.

In 2011, the stadium received a minor upgrade that focused on the stadium's facilities and the pitch.

No developments are expected at the moment, with other plans being presented that aim to further modernise the stadium.

How to get to Stadion Maksimir

The Stadion Maksimir is located in the city of Zagreb, near the railway station and the historic center. The stadium is surrounded by Maksimir Park, the city's largest park. The stadium is close to two of Zagreb's main avenues, Maksimirska and Zvonimirova. These two avenues connect the stadium with the centre and the city's ring road in the east.

There are various tram options to reach the stadium. From Ban Jela?i? Square, one can either take tram 11 or 12 to Dubrava, which both pass by the stadium north over Maksimirska avenue. Get off at stop Bukova?ka or Hondlova. Alternatively, you can take tram 1 or 17 to Borongaj, which both pass by the stadium south over Zvonimirova. Get off at stop Svetice.

From the main railway station, one can take either tram 4 or 9. Tram 4 passes over Maksimirska avenue, whereas tram 9 passes over Zvonimirova.

From the bus station, you can take tram 7 or 5 to Dubrava or Maksimir.

All trams go at least once every 15 minutes. Generally, they run much more frequently than that, but it can range from around 10 minutes to 20 minutes depending on where you get on.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Stadion Maksimir

Maksimir Stadium is located in a residential neighbourhood. It is bordered on its northern side by Maksimir Park, which is a pleasant place to spend a few hours on a nice day. There is also a zoo nearby. There are some places to eat and drink along Maksimirska avenue, but you can do this just as well in Zagreb?s centre and then catch a quick tram to the match.

There are hotels and rental apartments west of Stadion Maksimir on or around Maksimirska avenue, at about 10 minutes walking of the stadium. Hotel Maksimir is affordable and gets decent reviews, and Funk Lounge Hostel will please the budget traveller.

Dinamo Zagreb Tickets

Tickets for Dinamo matches can be bought online, at the stadium on the day of the match, or at the ticket office. Tickets are available on the gate from a few hours before kick-off. Dinamo never sell out a regular league match. Identification may be required in order to be able to buy a ticket.

Tickets for regular league matches typically cost between 5 and 15 Croatian kunas (Croatian currency units, approximately 1.25 to 4.00 U.S. dollars). The prices will be higher for more important matches (like the Champions League), but Dinamo occasionally offers discounted prices as low as 1 kuna.

The official websites for GNK Dinamo Zagreb and the Zagreb Tourist Board are gnkdinamo.hr and zet.hr, respectively. These websites provide information on what to do in Zagreb as well as how to get around town via public transportation. I caught tram number 7 from outside the bus station. There are various trams that go to the stadium. I would like to go there again but maybe for the game against Hajduk or European opposition.
