History and description

The Millennium Stadium is a large stadium in Wales that is used for football matches. It is the third largest stadium in Britain. The stadium was built to host the final of the 1999 Rugby World Cup and replaced Wales' previous national stadium, the Cardiff Arms Park, which by that time had gotten severely outdated and lacked the facilities to stage such a final.

Construction of the stadium began in 1997 and was completed in 1999 at a total cost of $114 million. The first match played at the stadium was a rugby friendly between Wales and South Africa. The first football match was a friendly between the Welsh and Finnish national teams in March 2000.

During the reconstruction of Wembley Stadium, the FA Cup and League Cup finals were hosted at the Millennium Stadium. The FA Community Shield was also played there.

The stadium was the standard playing venue for the Welsh national team during its first decade, but with declining attendances and smaller modern alternatives available in the Liberty Stadium and Cardiff City Stadium, the Welsh team has since played most matches at one of these smaller stadiums.

In 2016, the stadium changed its name to Principality Stadium following a naming rights sponsorship deal.

In 2017, the Millennium Stadium hosted the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus (a victory for the Italian side).

The stadium has a retractable roof that can be opened in 20 minutes and is being held up by four 90-metre high masts.

How to get to the Millennium Stadium

It has a seating capacity of over 79,500 people. The Millennium Stadium is located in the heart of Cardiff, opposite Cardiff Central Rail station. It has a seating capacity of over 79,500 people. Many trains connect Cardiff with London Paddington, Birmingham New Street, and Bristol.

If arriving by car, you should make your way to the centre of Cardiff and find a parking place, which will almost always be at walking distance from the stadium.

Visitcardiff.com is the official tourism website for Cardiff and has everything you need to know about visiting the city. Nationalrail.co.uk is a great resource for train times and fares in Wales. We sat on the half way line, just behind Nick Mallett and the Springbok retinue. I wonder if anyone knows the approximate value of the Ticket from that match?

I went to the Ireland v Canada rugby world cup group match in 2015 with the roof closed and it added to the atmosphere. On a nice day, take a walk through the city center, down to the harbor. Some beautiful buildings to enjoy.

I have watched three Welsh rugby games at the stadium. I travel from Kidderminster to see Wales play. I have enjoyed every game we watch, and would like to say thank you to the ticket people who help me out when I buy my tickets. Although I can't do heights, all of you always help me out.

Daniel Peasley wrote: The Millennium Stadium is excellent because it has a good view from most seats. I have also been to the San Siro, Old Trafford and Wembley, and it is in my opinion as good as any experience as any of those I have mentioned. It is easy to get in before the game and out after the game, with great facilities for refreshments and toilets. All in all, a great day no matter how your team does.
