History and description

During the 99 years since, the stadium has undergone a series of expansions and renovations that have increased its capacity to over 80,000 spectators. The Millerntor-Stadion opened in 1963 and could initially hold about 32,000 spectators. Over the course of the 99 years since, it has undergone a series of expansions and renovations which have increased its capacity to over 80,000 spectators. Over the years, the stadium underwent various smaller renovations that decreased its capacity to just over 20,000 due to safety measures.

In 1970, the stadium was renamed Wilhelm-Koch-Stadion in honour of the ex-president of the club. However, it later turned out that he had been a member of the Nazi Party during World War 2 and so the stadium was renamed to Millerntor-Stadion again.

In 2006, St. Pauli announced a major redevelopment program that aimed to turn Millerntor-Stadion into a modern arena with a seating capacity of 30,000 people. Over a period of eight years, all stands would gradually get rebuilt.

A new south stand opened one year later in 2007, but then works got delayed due to the economic crisis. They continued in 2009 when the main stand got demolished and a new one was built in its place. At the same time, the north stand got expanded and refurbished.

The reconstruction of the stand opposite the main stand started in the summer of 2012 and was completed in early 2013.

How to get to Millerntor-Stadion

The Millerntor-Stadion is located in central Hamburg. It's near the Heiligengeistplatz fair ground, the Planten und Bomen park, and the Kiez nightlife area (around the Reeperbahn). The stadium is less than a 30-minute walk from the central Rathaus square in Hamburg?s city centre, and can also be reached by metro. The stop St. Pauli is closest to the stadium and on line U3, which crosses right through the city centre.

Address: Heiligengeistfeld, 20359 Hamburg

Tickets for St. Pauli matches can be bought online, by phone (+49) 0 18 05 99 77 19, or at the ticket centre at the Millerntor-Stadion. Tickets for St. Pauli home matches are often in high demand, so it is advised to purchase tickets in advance.

Tickets vary in price from ?28.00 for a seat behind the goal to ?43.00 for a central seat at the main stand. Standing costs $12.50 behind the goal, or $14.50 at the sides.

Stadium tours

St. Pauli offers guided stadium tours that last 120 minutes and include the VIP areas, dressing rooms, and the stands. A tour of the museum runs multiple times a week, typically at 2:30pm on weekdays, but also earlier or later on the weekends. Check the schedule online to see which tours are currently running.

Tours cost thirteen fifty and can be booked online, or at the ticket centre at the stadium.

Relevant Internet links

The official website of FC St. Pauli, Hamburg tourism information, and Hamburg public transport travel information are all available on HVV.de. I expect that the facilities, such as the toilets, will be much improved as the portacabin design is appropriate for St Pauli's earthy image. Although to be honest, this type of design suits St Pauli's image well because most of the fans we stood with seemed very genuine and mostly too old to be considered hipsters. The ground is easily accessible with underground stations at both ends of the stadium and there are plenty of pubs and bars on Reeperbahn and its surrounding streets.

The two teams played to a 1-1 draw and both sides showed excellent quality. We attended the St Pauli v Ingolstadt match at the beginning of the 2014/15 season. The atmosphere was excellent and both teams displayed great quality.

Although many people believe that this nickname suits St. Pauli's earthy image, I know that the fans who stood with us seemed very genuine and mostly too old to be considered hipsters.
