History and description

The unique design by architect Pedro Andrade was chosen in a competition. The Estadio Monumental David Arellano was built in the late 1950s, and Colo-Colo was a club on the rise at the time. Its president, Labán, decided that it needed a new club-owned stadium and so he chose the unique design by architect Pedro Andrade in a competition. However, the project was halted due to political instability. The president attempted to built a stadium with 120,000 seats that would have been one of the playing venues of the 1962 World Cup. The club purchased a site in the south of the city and began building works in 1957, but the project was canceled due to political instability.

An earthquake struck Chile in 1960, shortly before the World Cup was set to begin. The government decided to only play the tournament in stadiums that were already finished, depriving other grounds of their unfinished status.

It took the club 15 years to find the funds to continue construction of Estadio Monumental. The official opening of Estadio Monumental occurred on April 20, 1975 with a match between Colo-Colo and Aviación (1-0).

The stadium was not suitable for use and Colo-Colo moved back to the National Stadium after only 5 matches.

Despite numerous setbacks, the club continued to work on completing the stadium. However, after selling Rubio to Bologna 24 years later, they were finally able to complete it.

The first goal of the game was scored by Julio César Falcao Sosa.

The stadium recorded its highest attendance in 1992 during the derby with Universidad de Chile. A total of 69,305 people were present at the game.

Since 2006, capacity gradually decreased due to safety measures and the installation of proper seats.

The stadium was built in 1929 and has a seating capacity of just over 50,000.
