History and description

The Estádio Municipal de Leiria was built to serve as one of the playing venues of the 2004 European Soccer Championship. It was named after former Leiria mayor Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, who had presided over the construction of the old stadium that had stood at the same site. The architect of the stadium was Tomás Taviera, who also designed Estádio José Alvalade and Estádio Municipal de Aveiro.

The first was between England and Turkey on 16 June 2004, which ended in a 2-2 draw. The second was the final match of Group B between the Czech Republic and Spain on 27 June 2004, which ended in a 2-1 victory for Spain. The Estadio Municipal de Leiria officially opened on November 19, 2003 with a friendly match between Portugal and Kuwait (8-0). It hosted two group matches during the European Championships: the first was between England and Turkey on June 16, 2004, which ended in a 2-2 draw. The second was the final match of Group B between the Czech Republic and Spain on June 27, 2004, which ended in a 2-1 victory for Spain.

The European Championships lowered the capacity of the stadium from 30,000 to its current amount of just over 23,000.

UD Leiria decided to move its home stadium, Estadio Municipal de Leiria, to a smaller stadium due to the high rental costs and the club's low attendances.

There is talk of the stadium being demolished by the city of Leiria due to its high cost and burden on taxpayers. However, at this point there are no concrete plans yet for this.

How to get to Estadio Municipal de Leiria

Leiria's Estadio Municipal de Leiria is located just north of the city centre, and a ten-minute walk from there will take you to the stadium. Train station, which is only served by regional trains, lies almost 2 km north-west of the stadium, at the edge of the city.

Address: Arrabalde d?Aquém, 2400-137 Leiria
