History and description

It had a seating capacity of 39,000 spectators and hosted the European Athletics Championships in 1984 and 1988. The stadium also hosted the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 1987 and 1993. The stadium was closed to the public in 2007 due to safety concerns arising from the 2007 Athens earthquake; it reopened on 14 March 2009, after almost a year of renovations, with a seating capacity of 33,500 spectators. The Olympic Athletic Center of Athens "Spiros Louis?", which opened between 1980 and 1982, hosted the European Athletics Championships in 1984 and 1988. It had a seating capacity of 39,000 spectators. The stadium also hosted the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 1987 and 1993. After 2007 earthquakes damaged it safety concerns arose that led to its closure to the public for nearly a year renovation process that culminated with its reopening on 14 March 2009 at 33,500 spectator capacity. The Spiros Louis Stadium is named after the Greek winner of the first Olympic marathon.

One year later, in 1983, the European Cup final between Hamburger SV and Juventus was played at OAKA Stadium. In 1987, the Cup Winners? Cup final between Ajax and Lokomotiv Leipzig was played at OAKA Stadium.

In 1984, Panathinaikos moved into their new stadium, OAKA, after their old one, Leoforos Stadium, had fallen into disrepair. AEK used the stadium between 1985 and 1987, but then decided to move back to their old stadium, Nea Filadelfeia.

In 1994, the AC Milan and Barcelona teams competed in a European Cup final at OAKA Stadium. The match was won by Barcelona 4-0.

In 2000, Panathinaikos moved back to the Leoforos Stadium, and soon thereafter work started on redeveloping it for the 2004 Olympic Games. The most striking new feature was the roof designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

In 2007, the Champions League final was played between AC Milan and Liverpool at OAKA Stadium. The game ended in a 2-1 victory for Liverpool.

Following the Olympics, AEK and Panathinaikos both returned to their stadiums after their old stadiums had again fallen into disrepair and failed to meet safety requirements.

Both clubs had plans to build new stadiums, but those plans stalled because there wasn't enough money. Panathinaikos didn't manage to get their stadium project off the ground, but in 2014 they patched up their Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium enough to move back in. The move only lasted five years though as in 2018 they moved back to OAKA.

AEK finally received approval for a new stadium in 2018, and works on their new home, Agia Sofia Stadium, are currently ongoing with an expected completion date of 2021.

How to get to OAKA Stadium

OAKA Stadium is located within the Olympic complex in the Maroussi area of Athens, about 9 km from the city center. The Olympic Stadium can be reached by metro. Stations Irini and Neratziotissa on line M1 lie close to the complex. Line M1 runs through Athens city centre without any stops.

Address: 37 Kifissias Ave. and Spirou Loui, Maroussi, Athens

Eat, drink, and sleep near OAKA Stadium

Finally, closer to the city centre, is the small Goudi shopping centre. If you're looking for a good restaurant or café in the adjacent neighbourhoods, you'll probably find some, but it's probably not worth your time to focus on the city centre for eating and drinking. The city centre is also where most of Athens' nightlife is, though part of it moves to the southern beaches (e.g. Glifada) for the summer.

There are a few hotels near the stadium if you want to stay close. The Civitel Olympic and Athens Habitat are both located near the Golden Hall, but they're not cheap. The Olympic Hotel is further away, but it's also cheaper. The Civitel Attik is another option if you want to stay close to the stadium. It's north of the stadium near The Mall.

AEK Tickets

Tickets for AEK matches can be bought online, by phone (801 100 2121), at the Ticket Office at OAKA Stadium, or at one of the club's two Fan Shops, which are located in the suburbs far out of the city center. Tickets can also be purchased on the gate on the day of the match.

Tickets typically start at $10.00 for a seat behind the goal. Tickets for the long sides cost either $15.00 or $40.00, and VIP seats go for $100.00.

Panathinaikos Tickets

Panathinaikos tickets can be bought online through viva.gr, or at any of the viva sales points (vivaspots). Do you know where the Central Vivaspots are located in the city of Athens? They are located on Leoforos Eleftheriou Venizelou 54 in the north of the city centre, and on My Market store on ???? 4-6 just south of the Acropolis Museum.

Tickets typically go on sale four to five days in advance of a match, but for high-profile matches this may occur earlier. Panathinaikos rarely sells out a regular league match.
