History and description

Located in Kiev, the stadium has a capacity of 78,000 and was completed in 1996. The National Sports Complex Olimpiyskiy is the Ukrainian national stadium and home to FC Dynamo Kiev. The stadium was built in 1996 and has a capacity of 78,000 people. On 22 June 1941, the Olimpiyskiy Stadium was originally planned to open. It had been built five years earlier at the site of the previous Red Stadium, which was named in honor of Soviet revolutionary Leon Trotsky.

The opening match was originally scheduled to be between Dynamo Kiev and CBCA Moscow, but because the German army invaded Russia on the opening day, the match had to be postponed.

It served as a concentration camp, death camp, and extermination camp for the Jews of Budapest until its liberation by the Soviet Red Army on 9 April 1945. A few months later, the Germans entered and occupied the city. Despite the harsh conditions, the stadium officially opened on 12 July 1942 as a concentration camp, death camp and extermination camp for the Jews of Budapest. It served as a concentration camp, death camp and extermination camp until its liberation by the Soviet Red Army on 9 April 1945.

The stadium was heavily damaged one year after the Germans retreated, and it took a year for it to be repaired. On 25 June 1944, it reopened with the match that was originally planned to be played in 1941.

In the 1990s, it was considerably shortened, losing its traditional capacity in favor of modern amenities. In 1966 the stadium was enlarged with a second tier to house over 100,000 spectators. Later renovations followed before the 1980 Moscow Olympics, during which a series of matches were played in the football tournament. In the 1990s, however, the stadium was shortened and lost its traditional capacity in favor of modern amenities.

In the 1970s, Central Stadium went by the name of Central Stadium. But in 1996, it was renamed to Olympic Stadium after the 1980 Olympics. Two years later, it underwent a refurbishment and new seats were installed, which decreased its capacity to about 83,000.

Reconstruction of the Olimpiyskiy stadium in order to host the Euro 2012 final required a major round of redevelopment works which included the complete reconstruction of the first tier, the rebuilding of the entire West Stand, and installation of a roof on previously uncovered stadium.

It was very crowded and the atmosphere was really great.

Until recently, Dynamo Kiev had only used the Olimpiyskiy Stadium for European cup matches. For their league matches, they had used the smaller Lobanovskyi Stadium. However, they were initially unsure whether to move into the new stadium completely. However, in the end they were successfully lured and played their first league match there on March 4, 2012 against Arsenal Kiev (1-0).

NSC Olimpiyskiy has been selected to host the 2018 Champions League final.
