According to market analysts, streaming giants such as Hulu, HBO, and Netflix have captured a large segment of the premium streaming market. However, it is the free, ad-supported streaming services that are grabbing the most eyeballs these days. These relatively new influxes of free sites are competing to grab the audience's attention and are lining up to become a comprehensive cord-cutting option.
Popcornflix is a streaming app that provides access to TV shows, movies, and local files. It is an intuitive interface with eye-catching design and content. The app has risen to prominence in recent times and is known for its quality. It allows you to watch TV shows, movies, and local files on a variety of devices.
What is Popcornflix?
Popcornflix is a free streaming platform where you can watch your favorite movies and TV shows in standard definition. You don't have to make an account to stream content on this platform, either from the website or the app. Whether you choose to use the website or the app, you can stream content without providing any personal information. In this particular review, we're specifically reviewing the app, so everything below will be app-related.
What should you expect from the Popcornflix App?
Popcornflix is available on a dozen different devices. First, you can download it on your mobile phone. Other than that, you can find the app on Amazon Fire TV, Xbox 360, Roku, BlackBerry, Samsung, and even gaming consoles such as Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The Popcornflix app supports Chromecast so if you're interested in watching content on your Smart TV, you can do so instantaneously.
Great in-app experience
Overall, I highly recommend Popcornflix to anyone who is looking for a high-quality movie streaming experience.
I wanted to make sure that all versions of Popcornflix were created equally and that their app was the best in comparison to the web app and website. The interface was elegant and the ad-placement wasn't obtrusive. Furthermore, content discovery on the app was amazing thanks to the search bar and numerous filter options to narrow down content bucket. The most standout aspect was the hidden menu at top of screen which allowed the hero section and body section of app to stand out more. Overall, I highly recommend Popcornflix to anyone looking for a high-quality movie streaming experience.
Content Galore
Popcornflix is extremely popular with all demographics because of its diverse content range. You'll find a wide variety of genres, such as Comedy, Action, Thriller, Family, Drama, Mystery, Old School Classics, Stand-up Comedy and Documentaries. Movies have been bifurcated based on these genres and thus you don't have to worry about sorting out content to find the ideal title. If you're just in for the latest movies, make sure to check out the New Arrivals section.
Unique Video Player
One of the primary reasons I chose this platform is because of its unique video player. Popcornflix's player allows you to make GIFs from a video and add comments like those on SoundCloud. These comments are a great way to gauge viewer opinions about specific scenes, dialogues, and overall screenplay. However, you will need to create an account in order to use all these features.
Lacks certain Features
Unlike Crackle and other free streaming platforms that allow subtitles as toggle options, Popcornflix has completely omitted this important feature. All you?ll find are volume control, full-screen button, and video movement. While I?m slightly disappointed with the lack of subtitles option, I can still appreciate the ?Theater Mode? after the full-screen which allows me to immerse myself in the video.
Multiple Apps
Did you know that Popcornflix offers multiple apps? There's an adult app and a kid app. That's quite a thoughtful gesture from the developers. Though Popcornflix Kids just has kid movies, it does allow parents to breathe easily without worrying about the content on the regular app. The user-interface and design on both the apps are quite similar, so even if you were to just accompany your kids for an animated movie, you won't have difficulty in operating the app.
Popcornflix App Information
The Popcornflix app has been installed over a million times and it is one of the lightest content streaming apps available. If you have Android KitKat or an OS that was released after that, you should have no trouble streaming content on this app. The app is currently running on a 4.53.0 version and is updated every month.
How to access Popcornflix?
In addition, you can watch Popcornflix on your computer by using a web browser.
Design
I have to admit that I really appreciate the simple and intuitive interface of this app. It's super easy to navigate, and the hidden menu gives the hero section an extended breathing space which makes navigating even better. The content is well-organized based on genres on recommendation and the thumbnails stand out because of the dark theme.
App homepage
Towards the right, there is a search bar that allows you to quickly and easily find whatever you're searching for.
Inner Pages
If you click on any title on the homepage, you will be redirected to the inner page. I love how simple yet effective this page is. First, you will see a small banner followed by the title, genre, and "Play More?" button. Under that, you have a short synopsis followed by information related to cast and crew. You will find this information for each and every show.
Content
When it comes to streaming content, you can't set your expectations too high on a free streaming platform like Popcornflix. If you do, you'll be disappointed. However, the platform does have a decent content library covering a wide range of genres with some entertaining older animated content. One thing I can say for sure is that this app has something for everyone.
Desktop/Mobile experience
Popcornflix performs smoothly on most compatible platforms. However, I need to inform you that you cannot expect HD or Ultra HD clarity from this app. Sure, it's better than the pixilated web app version, but it's nothing extraordinary. Other than that, if you stream on Roku, you would be able to stream conveniently on SD quality.
The ads on the streaming app ruin whatever experience you have. You would have to watch 15-20 second ads before every stream. It's not the ads that bother me, but the number of ads that make you want to bounce off and uninstall the app right away. But if you want to watch the content, that's the trade-off.
Even on the Pixel 3, I faced some buffering and loading issues. The videos didn't even play at times and would stop and buffer for several minutes before getting back on track. At 32MBPs, I don't consider my internet to be a stumbling block, but if you're streaming, expect issues like these.
Suggestions I have for Popcornflix
If you want to compete with the apps backed by big companies, Popcornflix needs to up its game. The streaming quality needs to be massively improved, and the developers need to do justice to the amazing interface by back it up with impressive streaming capabilities.
Conclusion
Overall, Popcornflix is a decent streaming app to have on your device. It has quite a few impressive titles, decent streaming quality, and great compatibility. So, if you're done with Crackle and are looking for an alternative, you can try Popcornflix. Though I'm not sure whether this app will satiate your streaming desires, there's no harm in trying.
