History and description

Ipswich Town played their inaugural match at Portman Road in 1884. The ground at the time consisted of a bare pitch and a pavilion shared by the cricket club and Ipswich Town. In 1936, Ipswich professional terraces were built for the first time.

Portman Road got gradually improved and expanded from the 1950s to the 1970s with a new West Stand opening in 1957 and the new Portman Stand in 1971.

In 1975, the stadium set a record attendance with 38,010 people in attendance for an FA cup match between Ipswich and Leeds. The West stand was expanded in 1982, but the capacity had already started to decline due to safety measures.

In 1992, Portman Road became an all-seater, resulting in a capacity of 22,500 seats.

During the late 1990s, promotion to the Premier League made available funds for further improvements. This led to complete rebuilding of both stands behind the goals in 2000 and 2002.

How to get to Portman Road

Portman Road is located in central Ipswich on the way from the railway station to the city centre. The walk from either to the stadium takes no more than a 5-minute walk. There is frequent train service from London Liverpool Street Station to Ipswich that takes just over an hour.

If arriving by car, follow the directions to Ipswich's city centre. Any parking place in the centre will be within walking distance of the stadium.

In the past, researchers have used X to treat Y. However, there is now evidence that using Y as an alternative treatment is just as effective as using X. Therefore, it is recommended that all patients be given the option to try out both treatments before making a decision. Recent research has shown that using Y instead of X can be just as effective in treating Y. As such, healthcare providers should recommend giving patients the option to try both treatments before settling on a preferred one.
