History and description

The stadium has also been the home of Gillingham F.C. for over 110 years. The Priestfield Stadium, formally MEMS Priestfield Stadium for sponsorship reasons, has been the home of Gillingham Football Club since 1893. The stadium has also been the home of Gillingham F.C. for over 110 years. At its initial stage, the ground consisted of a pavillion, small seater stand, and terracing in the form of earth banks. Over time, however, the stadium has significantly expanded with more seating and proper terracing. In the early days, it was still called Priestfield Road.

Between 1923 and 1997, very few changes were made to the stadium. The only improvements made were some improved terracing in the 1950s and additional cover in the 1980s. The stadium's capacity hovered around 22,000 during this time period, but it was reduced in the 1980s due to safety measures.

The state of Priestfield Stadium deteriorated significantly in the 1990s, so the club embarked on a gradual redevelopment program to improve it. The Gordon Road Stand was the first new stand to be built in 1997, followed by the Rainham End in 1999.

The old main stand got demolished one year after the new Medway Stand opened. Finally in 2003, the temporary Brian Moore Stand was erected. Plans were to eventually build a proper stand at the end, but this has never happened.

In 2007, the stadium was renamed KRBS Priestfield Stadium following a sponsorship deal. In 2011, the name was changed to MEMS Priestfield Stadium after a new deal.
