TV viewing devices have changed the way we consume content. With the rise of various set-top media centers, people are cutting the cord at an alarming rate. Can you believe that Apple rolled out this next-gen set-top media center more than a decade ago? Back then, it was considered a luxury that was way ahead of its time. But now, you can see the likes of firestick, Chromecast, and others battling it out with Apple TV. With Apple TV, you get access to millions of hours of content on the go. There are three variants offered by the Cupertino-based company with the base variant providing a standard 1080p HD quality, whereas the two expensive models provide 4K HDR output. Regardless of the streaming service you choose, you will be able to consume the same amount of content. You can access a gargantuan library of streaming services, including the likes of Hulu, HBO Now, DirecTV Now, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime. What makes Apple TV so good is that it is one of the easiest to use media centers in the world with an extremely simple design. But at the same time, it does cost $100 more than any of its nearest competitors, and so if you don't mind spending that money for form over factor then Apple TV can be an obvious choice.

How does Apple TV work?

Apple TV requires the internet to function. To use it, plug in the device using an HDMI cable and turn it on. The Apple TV will guide you through the setup process, which includes entering your Apple ID. After that, you'll be able to access your stored data on iCloud and watch streaming content from services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO GO. The community that forms a solid fan base for Apple TV is r/appletv. This subreddit is where you can discuss everything about Apple TV, including news, apps, and tech support. Keep reading because you're going to learn a lot.

My memorable experience on r/appletv

As I recall, I upvoted a post where a fellow user BonsTempsRouler posted a video suggesting that you can navigate Apple TV using Xbox One/PS4 controllers in TVOS 13. I was psyched after watching it, just a few months later I saw another complete setup regarding the same topic and even saw a streaming session where another user was enjoying 1080p streaming in a hassle-free manner. It's good to see how creatively people can mix and match tech to come up with the solution that fits their needs the best.

About r/appletv - Community & Members

The community has 79,500 members, of which 300-450 members are online at any given time. This subreddit was created on September 1, 2010, and focuses on small niche communities that are Apple-centric. For this particular community it would be unfair to judge them based on numbers because it's clear that Apple TV is not the biggest and brightest thing in the TV space.

How to access r/appletv?

If you are not a Reddit member, you will need to create an account and confirm your email address in order to participate in the Appletv community. Once you do so, you will be able to follow subreddits, comment on posts, and post anything on any of the subreddits.

Moderators of r/appletv

I am slightly disappointed with the number of mods on this page. But then I think about how many members there are, and I realize that is not so bad. One mod per 20,000 members isn't that bad, given most of the communities with over 5 million members have 10 mods. At the time of writing this review, I found 4 mods on r/appletv - "xvvhiteboy," "missmurrr," "iHuy," and "anonboxis."

Why should you follow r/appletv?

This community is my go-to-place for troubleshooting small issues that I encounter. It is filled with amazing content related to updates, problem solving, compatible devices, and so on. If you're not into the tech world, but want to stay up-to-date with what's happening in the Apple TV sphere, this is the perfect community for you. As far as the volume goes, more than two dozen posts are uploaded each day. The Apple TV navigation using Xbox One/PS4 controllers received 400+ upvotes and 86 comments.

Original Shows

One of the most interesting parts of this page is the "Original TV Shows" section. Under that, you'll find related groups purely focused on original TV shows. So, you'd find five options- r/AmazingStories - 278 members, r/TheMorningShow - 4,119 members, r/MythicQuest - 1,921 members, r/ForAll Mankind - 552 members, and r/SeeTV - 2,115 members. Alongside each of these options, you'll find a "Join" button. Simply click on that to join the original shows community.

Community Engagement

Despite being only 100,000 strong, r/appletv engages with their community well. The all-time top post on this subreddit has not yet received 1000 upvotes, but it is still better than subreddits such as r/gamemusic and almost as good as r/Videography. A top post on any given day attracts about 20-30 upvotes and 5-6 comments.

Related Subreddits

Another interesting section in the sidebar of r/appletv is the related subreddits. You have six options to choose from: r/tvOSBeta - 1,820 members, r/AppleTVPlus - 4,213 members, r/AppleArcade - 9,427 members, r/AppleMusic - 43,544 members, and r/apple - 1.45 million members. By clicking on the Join button, you'll be able to become a part of this sub-niche community or a broader community. For instance, r/apple is the biggest apple-related subreddit, and on the opposite end, r/Siri has the least members at 4361. Nonetheless, all the related subreddits are active.

Reddit Gold

Since the engagement itself isn't off the charts, the gold allocation is pretty scarce too. I checked about 30 top posts and threads, but couldn't find more than three gold. Again, this is a niche where people are mostly showing off their new Apple TV, compatibility, and other gadgets related to the TV. Thus, posts like these don't attract many upvotes. On the contrary, when people help solve a problem or provide a suggestion, that is appreciated by the community and that can be seen in the form of comments.

Filter by flair

The filter by flair option is slightly disappointing because there is only "Rumor" that you can tag your post with to separate it from everything else. It would be great if the mods separated all the various types of post-based upon - news, rumor, update, compatibility, unboxing, question, suggestion- so that the content in this forum is more diverse. As of now, everything has been cluttered under one segment that's not "Rumor."

Important rules you must know before joining r/appletv?

If you are an Apple TV user or individual looking to buy one, it is definitely a group that you should be a part of. However, there are certain rules that you need to follow in order to ensure that you don't violate the guidelines set by the moderators. (It is against our policy to discuss or share pirated content on the subreddit.) Please respect each other's right to free speech and refrain from making rude or offensive comments. We also ask that you refrain from posting content that is not related to Apple TV. Finally, do not discuss or share pirated content on this subreddit.

Design

I was very impressed with the custom Apple TV logo on the black cover of this subreddit. The community icon looks amazing too. Other than the main menus and standard Reddit sorting options, you have a really interactive sidebar with helpful sections, especially the Original Series and Related Subreddits, to help you get started and become part of the niche.

Most Upvoted Content on this subreddit

I feel like this should work. I have 964 upvotes. What do you guys think? I have 710 upvotes. Goodbye Amazon. The Streaming Wars have begun. I have 616 upvotes. Merry Christmas to me, baby!

 Most Upvoted Content 2020

1. Recently, the clever icon for Apple Arcade - 571 upvotes - caught many people's attention. 2. Some people think that Apple TV+ should?ve been a separate tab in the Apple TV app. 3. No problem, I'll hold onto my opinon for now. 4. On this day in 2006, Apple TV was unveiled to the public - 482 upvotes. 5. After watching the first episodes of See and The Morning Show, many people are remembering these rumors and speculating on what will happen next.

Conclusion

If you're an Apple TV user and are looking for a community of like-minded people to talk about the latest news, updates, and features, then r/appletv is the place for you. There's usually a quick solution to any problem that you may encounter, so don't be afraid to ask for help.
